‘And just me being his little sister, always by his side, and being that support system,’ Janet said. ‘That’s always been my role.’

“I ALWAYS got you. Happy birthday, babe,” the actress, 41, captioned the post, soundtracked by a cover of Sonny & Cher’s iconic “I Got You Babe” by Boom Forest.

Timberlake will be commemorating his 43rd trip around the sun with a special one-night-only concert at Irving Plaza in New York City on Wednesday night.

The performance comes shortly after the *NSYNC member released his latest single “Selfish,” the first offering from his upcoming album Everything I Thought It Was, out March 15.

Over the weekend, Biel expressed her love for “Selfish” in a TikTok video of herself listening to the song nonstop as she went about her day.

“POV: Trying to get anything done the past 24 hours,” she wrote over the video, which featured clips of her brushing her teeth, doing some casual yoga in the bathroom and lip-syncing to the camera as her husband’s track played.

It would’ve been weird enough for Justin Timberlake, of all people, to open his new album with a sob story about the high price of fame. But one in which he frames the pain he’s endured as a byproduct of his devotion to his Tennessee hometown? That’s truly unhinged.

Yet it’s just what Timberlake does with “Memphis,” the first song on “Everything I Thought It Was,” which came out Friday, more than half a decade after the release of his previous LP. Over a bleary, slow-mo trap beat, the singer and former boy-band star, now 43, laments the isolation he experienced and the sacrifices he made on his way up — a wild choice given the critique that’s coalesced in recent years of Timberlake as a man long permitted to glide by troubles that damaged the women around him (including his ex-girlfriend Britney Spears and his onetime Super Bowl halftime partner Janet Jackson).

It’s also a baffling aesthetic approach: By rooting his struggles in his connection to an African American cultural capital — “I was way too far out in the world, but I still put on for my city,” he insists in his well-practiced blaccent — Timberlake is flaunting his proximity to Blackness at a moment when pop seems to have little of the use it once did for white guys doing R&B. Consider the disappearance of Robin Thicke; consider Justin Bieber’s apparent reluctance to jump back into the game.

Or consider that much of the discourse surrounding this year’s Super Bowl halftime performance, by Usher, had to do with the sorry fact that it took this Black superstar as long as it did to reach pop’s biggest stage while Timberlake was invited to headline six years ago — and after having taken part in the 2004 “wardrobe malfunction” that derailed Jackson’s career.

None of this is to doubt Timberlake’s genuine love of R&B nor to diminish his undeniable skill for making it: Though it’s larded with glib disco-funk tracks and morose, One Republic-style pop-rock tunes, “Everything I Thought It Was” contains a handful of gems in “Love & War,” a Prince-ish ballad with his prettiest falsetto singing, and the spacey slow jam “What Lovers Do”; “Selfish,” the album’s coolly received lead single, is another highlight, this one with echoes of Bieber’s underrated “Changes” from 2020.

Timberlake’s enthusiasms were also on display last week at the Wiltern, where he played an intimate free concert meant to drum up attention for the new music and for a world tour he’ll launch next month. His 2006 ballad “Until the End of Time” was soulful and unhurried — watch him do it with similar finesse in a just-released NPR Tiny Desk Concert — and he seemed sincerely amped to bring out Coco Jones, the up-and-coming R&B singer, for a duet on her slinky “ICU,” which he called one of his favorite songs of the last five years.

Jones wasn’t Timberlake’s only guest at the Wiltern: Near the end of the show, he reunited the members of ’N Sync to perform a medley of several of the band’s vintage hits, including “Gone,” probably its most impressive downtempo moment, and “Girlfriend,” which the group did as a raunchy mash-up with Too Short’s classic “Blow the Whistle.” (Less happily, the members also perched on five carefully arranged stools to offer the live debut of “Paradise,” a maudlin new ’N Sync song featured on “Everything I Thought It Was.”)

For most of the nearly two decades since ’N Sync’s initial breakup, Timberlake has appeared ambivalent about a comeback, even sitting out a much-hyped cameo by the group during Ariana Grande’s performance at Coachella in 2019. Here, though, he looked gratified to have his old pals by his side — and eager, perhaps, to revisit a time when his privilege promised unlimited mileage.

After 2018’s “Man of of the Woods,” Justin Timberlake is a Man of the Dance Floor again on his new album.

It’s been six long years since Justin Timberlake’s last studio album, 2018’s “Man of the Woods,” on which the pop superstar got his Americana on.

But many of the fans who had rocked their bodies to his previous hit LPs — from 2002’s “Justified” to 2006’s “FutureSex/LoveSounds” to 2013’s “The 20/20 Experience” — weren’t feeling the flannel on JT.

And, by his lofty standards, “Man of the Woods” was the first (relative) flop of his career. It was the first real misstep from a man who had seemed to have all the right moves as he smoothly grooved from curly haired boy-bander to sexy-MFing solo sensation.

But on “Everything I Thought It Was,” Timberlake, now 43,  is back to being a Man of the Dance Floor, a Man of the Bedroom and even, once again, a Man of the Boy Band.(Yup, *NSYNC is back!)

Suffice to say, Chris Stapleton is nowhere to be found on this joint.

Clearly, Timberlake is trying — almost desperately — to make up for lost time on his sixth solo LP, which stretches out to 77 minutes.

And no, it’s not a double album.

Just to give you some perspective, that’s over twice as long as Ariana Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine” — a far more cohesive and concise pop album that came out just a week ago.

When the opener “Memphis” — a nostalgic nod to Timberlake’s hometown that is basically an intro — takes its sweet time to unfold over four and a half minutes of moody hip-hop, you know you’re in for a long haul.

Timberlake’s sprawling scope shifts focus from the retro disco, funk and soul-pop of “Play” and new single “No Angels”  — which hark back to his best album, “FutureSex/LoveSounds” — to the sexy slow-jamming of “What Lovers Do” and the Prince-esque “Love & War.”

 

He even ambitiously attempts to mix gospel, rock and hip-hop on “Sanctified” (featuring Tobe Nwigwe) — but alas, this track can’t be saved.

And the final section of the album finds Timberlake looking back to his past with the romantic innocence of first single “Selfish” and the long-awaited *NSYNC reunion on “Paradise” that is the sweetest of throwbacks.

But while old-school steppers such as “F–kin’ Up the Disco” still hit the sumptuous spot for Timberlake — the man and his producers, led by longtime collaborators Timbaland and Danja, know how to make the dreamiest of soundscapes — other attempts to revive past glory days aren’t as successful.

“Drown” fails to recapture the beat-tastic magic of its smash predecessors “Cry Me a River” and “What Goes Around … Comes Around,” and “My Favorite Drug” can’t match the intoxicating high of “LoveStoned.”

But the seven-plus-minute “Technicolor” does succeed in bringing back the two-part shape-shifting of “FutureSex/LoveSounds” tracks such as “LoveStoned/I Think She Knows” and “Sexy Ladies/Let Me Talk to You.”

In the end, there’s probably a much better 50-minute album inside of “Everything I Thought It Was.” As it is, it feels like a deluxe LP filled out with all the bonus tracks that weren’t quite good enough to make the main affair.

Still, after six years away, too much Justin is better than none at all.
