NBA Star Jayson Tatum Invests $2M in Homeownership Initiative for Families in Hometown of St .Louis

He’s building a legacy that goes beyond the game!

NBA Star Jayson Tatum has always carried St. Louis, Missouri, in his heart—and now, he’s turning that hometown pride into real, life-changing impact. Through a powerful partnership between The Jayson Tatum Foundation and SoFi, nearly 100 families in St. Louis will soon be moving from renting to owning, thanks to a $2 million commitment toward homeownership, Essence reports.

The initiative will provide down payment and closing cost assistance to families who may have once seen homeownership as out of reach. On April 5th, the organizations hosted Financial Literacy Workshops in St. Louis to equip first-time homebuyers with tools and resources they need to thrive—financially and generationally. The six-time NBA All-Star and Olympic gold medalist matched SoFi’s $1 million contribution with a personal donation, doubling the impact and deepening his commitment to his community.

“Growing up in St. Louis, I saw firsthand how important financial stability and homeownership could be for families like mine,” said Tatum. “Through our partnership with SoFi and their investment in our region with their Generational Wealth Fund, we’re giving people in my hometown the tools and knowledge to take control of their financial futures. I’m proud to give back to the community that made me who I am.”

This isn’t a headline play—it’s personal. Tatum’s mother, Brandy Cole, who leads the foundation’s philanthropic efforts, says her son’s love for St. Louis has been unwavering, even before the fame.

“He’ll tell you everywhere he goes, he thinks it’s the greatest city in the world,” Cole shared. “He takes it personal that St. Louis isn’t always known for positive things, and he’s made it his mission to change that narrative.”

The foundation’s focus on homeownership is an extension of the family’s personal experience. Tatum’s grandmother, Kristie Jursch, shared how buying a small bungalow as a single mother changed the course of her life. Without access to programs like the one her grandson now funds, she worked seven days a week for over a year to repay a loan that covered her down payment and closing costs.

It’s this experiential understanding that fuels the foundation’s mission. After hearing from local women at community events who said they were eager to learn about investing, saving, and homeownership—but didn’t know where to start—Tatum’s team saw an opportunity.

“We were approached by a group of women who were basically telling us they’re not technically living check to check, or living in the projects or anything like that, but they’re also not wealthy. And they were saying they don’t really know who to trust, and they don’t have information about investing, or homebuying, or just basic financial literacy tools,” Cole recalled.

That conversation sparked the partnership between Tatum and SoFi. And while he’s one of the highest-paid players in NBA history with a $315 million contract, Tatum’s giving remains grounded. The Jayson Tatum Foundation is intentionally lean, run by a close-knit team of family and friends who have shown up for every drive, giveaway, and workshop. Whether it’s handing out turkeys, school supplies, or toys, Tatum shows up, schedules permitting, to be there for his community. At the heart of it all is a desire to help others write a new story—one where financial freedom, homeownership, and generational wealth aren’t distant dreams but real, tangible outcomes.

“I wish somebody would’ve told me to invest early on,” Cole said. “Even if it was just $25. These young people, if they could just learn more about money, about compound interest… just imagine what they could do.”

Thanks to Jayson Tatum, nearly 100 families won’t have to imagine anymore.
