As high school continued, George was not only interested in a budding romance with Norma, but he was also cultivating his love for music. Initially, his musical passion leaned more toward rock and roll, inspired by the British Invasion. George was part of a local band, The Stoics, drawing influence from The Beatles and other British artists. It wasn’t until he attended a live country music show that he truly found his calling. Inspired by legends such as Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, and Merle Haggard, George’s musical taste shifted toward country music, a genre that would later define his career.

But while his passion for music was growing, George never lost sight of Norma. After their high school graduation, George and Norma made a bold decision to elope to Mexico and get married in December 1971. This impulsive move marked the beginning of their life together, a partnership that would be as enduring as it was challenging.

The early years of their marriage weren’t without their struggles. George, ever the cowboy, was deeply invested in his family’s ranching business, but he also felt a pull toward music. He enlisted in the Army in 1971 and served as an infantryman in Hawaii, where Norma joined him. It was during this time that they had their first child, a daughter named Jennifer, in 1972. As George’s music career slowly began to take shape, they also found themselves building a family.

After leaving the Army in 1975, George went on to study agriculture at Texas State University, but he never fully left music behind. He joined a local band called Stony Ridge, which later became Ace in the Hole, and began performing across Texas. Though he faced early setbacks, including unsuccessful recordings and rejections from major labels, George continued to persevere. But just as he was ready to give up on his dreams of becoming a country music star, it was Norma who encouraged him to try one more time.

Norma’s support was crucial. She understood George’s deep passion for music, even when he was hesitant to continue. In a heart-to-heart conversation, Norma asked George to give music one more year, refusing to let him abandon his dreams. It was a decision that paid off. In 1981, George signed a record deal with MCA, and his debut single “Unwound” became a hit, reaching number six on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. This success led to the release of his first album, Strait Country, which would solidify his place in country music history.

In the years that followed, George’s career skyrocketed, with numerous chart-topping hits and album successes. However, despite his fame, his most significant source of strength remained Norma. She was always by his side, providing a sense of stability and calm amidst the whirlwind of success. But their life together would face its darkest hour in 1986 when they tragically lost their daughter, Jennifer, in a car accident.

The loss of Jennifer shattered both George and Norma, and the grief was overwhelming. For George, the only way to cope with the heartbreak was through his music. His career flourished even more during this period, with a string of number one hits that helped him break records. But behind the scenes, George and Norma were mourning the death of their daughter.

To honor Jennifer’s memory and prevent similar tragedies, George and Norma founded the Jennifer Lynn Strait Foundation in 1986. The foundation’s mission was to support children and prevent the kind of loss they had experienced. Though the pain of their loss never fully faded, George and Norma channeled their grief into something positive, helping others while continuing to raise their son, Bubba.
