Gene Hackman died of heart disease, about one week after wife died of hantavirus: investigators

SANTA FE, N.M. — Gene Hackman died due to hypertensive atherosclerosis cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer’s disease as a significant contributing factor, New Mexico officials confirmed Friday. He was likely alone in the home for about a week, until he died around Feb. 18, which was the last time activity was recorded on his pacemaker.

His wife, Betsy (Arakawa) Hackman, died due to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, which is transmitted from animals to humans and is commonly found in rodents, the New Mexico Department of Health confirmed. Her autopsy determined the manner of death as natural. Authorities believe she died on or about Feb. 11.

Chief Medical Investigator Dr. Heather Jarrell performed a full autopsy on Hackman the day after his body was discovered, which showed “severe heart disease, including multiple surgical procedures involving the heart, evidence of prior heart attacks, and severe changes of the kidneys due to chronic high blood pressure.”

She added, “Examination of the brain showed advanced Alzheimer’s disease as well as blood vessel changes in the brain secondary to chronic high blood pressure.”

Jarrell noted that Hackman’s pacemaker data indicated “abnormal rhythm of atrial fibrillation” on Feb. 18. She said it was “reasonable to conclude” Arakawa died the week before Hackman, with the actor’s death likely on Feb. 18.

“Based on the circumstances, it is reasonable to conclude that [Arakawa] passed away first, with February 11th being the last time that she was known to be alive,” Jarrell said.

Investigators determined that Arakawa’s last known activities within the community included a veterinary visit on Feb. 9. Two days later, she was seen at a local grocery store, a pharmacy and a pet store before she returned home to their gated community at around 5:15 p.m. on Feb. 11, Sheriff Adan Mendoza said during the news conference.

When asked if authorities believed Hackman was able to live on his own and survive after his wife died, Jarrell noted that the Oscar-winning actor was in “a very poor state of health.”

“Based on the circumstances, it is reasonable to conclude that Miss Hackman passed away first, with February 11th being the last time that she was known to be alive.”

“Mr. Hackman showed evidence of advanced Alzheimer’s disease,” Jarrell said. “I’m not aware of what his normal daily functioning capability was. He was in a very poor state of health, and he had significant heart disease. And I think ultimately that is what resulted in his, in his death.”

Jarrell was unable to detect evidence of dehydration, and did find “poor kidney function” during the autopsy, but there was “no food in his stomach, which means he had not eaten recently.”

“He was in an advanced state of Alzheimer’s, and it’s quite possible that he was not aware that she was deceased,” the medical examiner said.

Jarrell explained that hantavirus is characterized by “flu-like symptoms consisting of fever, muscle aches, cough, sometimes vomiting and diarrhea that can progress to shortness of breath and cardiac or heart failure and lung failure.”

“This occurs after a one- to eight-week exposure to excrement from a, primarily, particular mouse species, that carries hantavirus,” she said. Hantavirus strains in the U.S. are not transmissible from person to person, but rather from animals to humans.

Dr. Erin Phipps, New Mexico State Veterinarian with the New Mexico Department of Health, explained that the state has confirmed between one and seven cases of the rare infection in humans each year, ending in 2024.

“We have identified 136 infections over the past 50 years in New Mexico residents, five of these in Santa Fe County,” Phipps said. “This is a serious disease. Forty-two percent of these infections here in New Mexico were fatal.”

Hackman and Arakawa, who were married for more than 30 years, and one of their dogs were found dead in their Santa Fe home on Feb. 26 by maintenance workers.

Mendoza indicated during the news conference that Zinna, the dog that had died, may have recently undergone a procedure which could “explain why the dog was in a crate” when she died.

Detectives initially described the couple’s deaths as “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation,” according to a search warrant affidavit obtained by Fox News Digital.

Officials confirmed that no external trauma was seen on either Hackman or Arakawa, and New Mexico authorities promptly launched a criminal investigation into their deaths.

Hackman and Arakawa previously tested negative for carbon monoxide, Mendoza confirmed last week. Their residence was tested for the colorless, odorless gas and was cleared by the Santa Fe City Fire Department after authorities were unable to find evidence of a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning.

Additionally, the New Mexico Gas Company confirmed on Tuesday “no significant findings” after conducting an extensive investigation for gas leaks and carbon monoxide at the couple’s secluded home.

A “minuscule leak (0.33% gas in air – not a lethal amount) at one of the stove burners” was discovered, according to a release obtained by Fox News Digital. Four code enforcement violations were also noted involving “a water heater and gas log lighters installed in three fireplaces.”

Mendoza previously said last week that the last recorded activity on Hackman’s pacemaker occurred on Feb. 17. Authorities assumed this was his last day alive, as the Oscar winner’s body was not discovered for nine more days.

“According to the pathologist, I think that is a very good assumption that that was his last day of life,” Mendoza said.

On Thursday, March 6, SpaceX‘s starship spacecraft exploded in space minutes after its launch. It was Starship’s eighth flight test, which lifted off from Starbase in Texas at 5:30 pm CT. The explosion led the FAA to halt air traffic at multiple airports in Florida.

Elon Musk‘s SpaceX live-streamed the launch, which showed engines cutting off from the rocket approximately eight minutes into the launch. SpaceX communications manager Dan Huot said during the webcast, “We just saw some engines go out. It looks like we are losing altitude control of the ship.” The spacecraft reportedly spun uncontrollably with its engines cut off before the communication was lost.

Several video are doing rounds on social media that captures debris falling through the sky near south Florida and the Bahamas. SpaceX confirmed in its official statement, that the final contact with Starship was made “approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds after liftoff.”

Explaining what went wrong, Space X wrote on its website, “Prior to the end of the ascent burn, an energetic event in the aft portion of Starship resulted in the loss of several Raptor engines. This in turn led to a loss of attitude control and ultimately a loss of communications with Starship.”

The Starship then flew “within a designated launch corridor” in order to ensure the safety of people on land, on water and in the air. The company confirmed that the debris fell within the pre-planned Debris Response area and that the debris had no toxic materials that could harm marine life or water.

After the failed mission, Space X wrote on micro-blogging site, X, “With a test like this, success comes from what we learn, and today’s flight will help us improve Starship’s reliability. We will conduct a thorough investigation, in coordination with the FAA, and implement corrective actions to make improvements on future Starship flight tests.”

Swiftly taking action, The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it “activated a Debris Response Area and briefly slowed aircraft outside the area where space vehicle debris was falling or stopped aircraft at their departure location.”

Flights to and from Miami International Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, etc were impacted due to SpaceX’s failed mission.

The failure of eighth Starship test comes just a month after the seventh one also met a similar fate in January. Two months into the year, and Elon Musk has witnessed two major failures. With his Starship mission, he hopes to establish a colony on Mars by 2050.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk hasn’t made any statement on his social media yet.

In a previous interview with Saga Magazine, Dolly spoke about how she wanted to focus on her career, hence why she didn’t want children.

She also said that she would “hate to be bringing a child into this world right now,” amid “everything that’s going on.”

Dolly also said: “I always say God didn’t let me have children so that all kids could be mine.”

Dolly shared a heartbreaking tribute to Carl following his passing.

Taking to Instagram to share her moving words, Dolly penned: “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together.

“Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years.

“Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”

Dolly did not reveal her husband’s cause of death but had previously been diagnosed with alzheimer’s disease in 2019.

The hitmaker also shared with Parade that her man was “very secure within himself”.

She told the outlet: “This is his statement: ‘Well, hell, I know it’s not easy out there. I’d feel less about any man that didn’t fall in love with you’.”

FOX News anchor Harris Faulkner has opened up about her fears over her two teenage daughters as one of them prepares to go to college.

The broadcast host, 59, shared her concerns for her two daughters, Bella and Danika, who she shares with her husband, Tony Berlin.

Faulkner admitted her fears about racial and political tensions as Bella plans to attend college in the fall.

“As a person of color, and as a person who speaks boldly about faith, it’s very adjacent when people are hated for the way that they believe, and their position in society,” Faulkner told the Daily Mail in a recent interview.

Faulkner and Berlin, a media consultant, raised their daughters in a household with different religions as Faulkner is Baptist Christian and Berlin is Jewish. The two have been married since 2003.

“Am I more worried about them standing out for their hair texture and their skin color or their faith?” she asked.

“I’m worried about all of it. And not just for my kids”

Faulkner continued, “I really think it’s important for Jewish children on campuses to know that they have partners, that the hate on the campus is a microcosm compared with the love that’s out there.”

The mom also shared her view that transgender women shouldn’t compete in sports, echoing President Donald Trump’s recent executive order.

Faulkner said her youngest daughter just completed eight years of competing at an elite level in gymnastics.

“The sport would be very different if there were biological men who could compete against my daughter,” she said.

“I want her to feel like her best accomplishments matter, and that the competition itself is fair,” she added.

Faulkner also added that her older daughter has already decided her political opinions.

“Bella knows who she is and she’s remarkably confident about for whom she’ll vote,” the anchor said.

She also called out The View Sunny Hostin for “dicey remarks” and for “coming for her” in a 2018 appearance.

Last year, Faulkner celebrated 10 years of hosting the Fox News afternoon program Outnumbered after joining the network in 2005.
