Ten years ago this fall, there came a VMAs moment that will live forever in infamy. It was the moment in which Kanye West stormed the VMAs stage as Taylor Swift attempted to accept her award for Best Video by a Female Artist and told her, “I’mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!”

On one level, the fact that the scandal would go on to have such legs seems absurd. It was such a petty nothing of a moment! A drunk celebrity with a history of being volatile acted out at an awards show: So what? Why was that such a big deal? Why is it so ingrained in our cultural consciousness now, 10 years later?

But the resulting fallout was explosive. What happened at the 2009 VMAs helped define Twitter as the conversation driver it is today. The story foreshadowed Kanye West’s eventual transformation into a pop culture villain, which would be realized with West’s embrace of Donald Trump and Trumpism. It set the narrative that Taylor Swift would always be a pop culture victim, for better or for worse. And the way it has influenced their two images in the decade since follows the lines of major schisms in American culture.

So as the 2019 MTV VMAs arrive, let’s take a look back at the 2009 VMAs and their long, long shadow.

Kanye West arrived on the red carpet of the 2009 VMAs clutching a bottle of Hennessy. In pictures of the red carpet on Getty Wire, you can see the level in the bottle gradually dropping as he makes his way up the carpet and drinks more and more. Kanye wasn’t performing that night, but he was nominated in multiple categories, and he was seated in the front row. According to Billboard’s oral history of the evening, he passed the bottle around to fellow celebrities as he waited for the show to start.

Taylor Swift arrived on the red carpet in a fanciful glass pumpkin-shaped Cinderella coach, wearing a glittering silver gown. She was in the process of crossing over from the country music scene to mainstream pop, and for the first time, she’d been invited to perform at the VMAs to sing “You Belong With Me.” She was also up for an award, for the “You Belong With Me” video. The coach and gown were a deliberate reference: Taylor was Cinderella, and the VMAs were the ball at which she could make her entrée into the world of pop music.

Taylor was nominated in only one category, Best Video by a Female Artist. Her big competition was Beyoncé, whose video for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” was one of the most acclaimed of the year. But Beyoncé was also up for the far more prestigious Video of the Year award, for which Taylor was not nominated — so when Taylor won the Best Female Video award before the ceremony had even reached its first commercial break, most people didn’t interpret her win as Taylor definitively beating Beyoncé. It was more likely that Beyoncé would get her moment later in the night.

JD Vance has gone viral after a resurfaced clip showed him making remarks about vice president Kamala Harris and others, which have been slammed as “sexist.” In the 2021 clip, Donald Trump’s running mate was heard telling former Fox News host Tucker Carlson that the country was run by “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable too.”

“Look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC, the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children,” Vance added. “How does it make any sense we’ve turned our country over to people who don’t really have a direct stake in it?”

Now, as the clip resurfaced, Vance began facing the wrath of fans of Taylor Swift, who is childless and is a proud cat mom. She is known to have several cats, including two Scottish Folds named Olivia Benson and Meredith Grey and a Ragdoll cat named Benjamin Button.

An X post with an image of Swift with a cat is captioned, “hell hath no fury like a certain childless cat lady who has yet to endorse a presidential candidate”. Many users took to the comment section, with one of them saying, “A lot of cat ladies are gonna be mad”. “So sick of the “baby factory” misogyny,” one user said, while another wrote, “I hope @taylorswift13 comes out for Kamala and against all these sexist comments from the Trumplican party and Trump himself.”

“Do they think that childless single people don’t vote?!” one user wrote, while another said, “News flash, JD, not all men want kids either. My husband didn’t, thank God. We have had lots of cats over the years though. And we’re quite happy.” “They will go absolutely mad when Swift endorses VP Harris. Just a matter of time. @taylorswift13, how about some concerts in your native PA and also MI, AZ, NC and GA?” one user wrote.

The resurfaced clip came after Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Harris. Harris is married to longtime entertainment lawyer Doug Emhoff, and has two step-children named Ella and Cole Emhoff.

During the conversation with Carlson, Vance also suggested that “if we want a healthy ruling class in this country, we should invest more, we should vote more, we should support more people who actually have kids. Because those are the people who ultimately have a more direct stake in the future of this country.”

On facing backlash for his comments, Vance had said that he believes he “struck a nerve.” “I mean, these people recognize that they’re unhappy. They’re living in one-bedroom apartments in New York City. They’ve played their entire lives to win a status game. They’re obsessed with their jobs,” he said, suggesting that they “hate normal Americans for choosing family.” Vance also said that these people would be “happier coming home to a smiling kid” than “worrying about their crappy job.”

Justin Bieber cancels shows after half of his face is left paralyzed by virus

Justin Bieber revealed on Friday that a virus has left the right side of his face paralyzed, forcing him to cancel a number of shows.

The 28-year-old musician announced in an Instagram video shared with his 240 million followers that the condition is due to a diagnosis of Ramsay Hunt syndrome.

According to Mayo Clinic, Ramsay Hunt syndrome is when “a shingles outbreak affects the facial nerve near someone’s ears” which is what Bieber explained in the video.

Earlier this week, the ‘Peaches’ singer postponed the opening stretch of the North American leg of the Justice World Tour, at the time citing an unspecified “sickness”.

“It is from this virus that attacks the nerve in my ear and my facial nerves and has caused my face to have paralysis,” the Canada-born singer said in the three-minute video, pointing to the right side of his face.

Bieber asked his fans to be patient as more of his upcoming dates will likely get canceled, adding that he is “physically, obviously, not capable of doing them”.

The ‘Baby’ singer tried to smile and blink to show fans how the side of his face does not move, saying: “This is pretty serious, as you can see. I wish this wasn’t the case, but, obviously, my body’s telling me I’ve got to slow down.”

“I hope you guys understand. I’ll be using this time to just rest and relax and get back to a hundred percent so that I can do what I was born to do,” he added.

Bieber comforted fans that his facial paralysis will subside over time. “I’m doing all of these facial exercises to get my face back to normal,” he said, highlighting that “it will go back to normal, it’s just time, and we don’t know how much time it’s going to be”.

He concluded: “I have hope, and I trust God, and I trust that this is… all for a reason. I’m not sure what that is right now, but in the meantime, I’m going to rest.”

The Mayo Clinic says that for most people, the symptoms of Ramsay Hunt syndrome are temporary but can become permanent.

It’s not confirmed when the singer will be back on stage. In an update posted to his Instagram Story just hours ago, he noted that “[it’s] been getting progressively harder to eat, which has been extremely frustrating”.

Unsettling footage of Diddy hanging out with 15-year-old Justin Bieber has resurfaced after the rapper’s homes were raided by Homeland Security.

The rapper and music executive – who is formerly known as Puff Daddy – is facing civil lawsuits over alleged sexual assault and sex trafficking.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed on Monday (March 25) that agents have raided properties in Los Angeles, Miami, and New York that belong to the 54-year-old.

In a statement, they wrote: “Earlier today, Homeland Security Investigations New York executed law enforcement actions as part of an ongoing investigation with assistance from HSI Los Angeles, HSI Miami, and our local law enforcement partners,” per The Independent. “We will provide further information as it becomes available.”

His legal team insisted he was innocent, and added: “There has been no finding of criminal or civil liability with any of these allegations. Mr. Combs is innocent and will continue to fight every single day to clear his name.”

“You ever seen the movie 48 Hrs? Right now [Justin is] having 48 hours with Diddy, him and his boy,” the music mogul says in the video. “They’re having the times of their lives, like where we hanging out and what we’re doing we can’t really disclose. But it’s definitely a 15-year-old’s dream.”

Combs says that he was “given custody” of Bieber and noted: “You know, he’s signed to Usher and I had legal guardianship of Usher when he did his first album. I did Usher’s first album. For the next 48 hours, he’s with me. And we’re gonna go full. Buck full crazy.”

The ‘Never Say Never’ hitmaker says “Let’s go get some girls,” when Diddy asks what he wants to do. “Man after my heart,” the rapper responds. “That’s what I’m talking about.”

The bizarre clip circulated on X (formerly Twitter) and garnered reactions from many users. One person said: “It’s super creepy seeing all these videos of Diddy that’s coming out.”

Another commented: “What 40-year-old wants to ‘hang out’ with a 15-year-old?” while a third added: “That is just strange.”

Moon Unit Zappa is just like us. But then again, she isn’t. She is the daughter of the legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Frank Zappa and at 14, was the featured vocalist on her dad’s only Top 40 hit, 1982’s “Valley Girl.”

But Moon’s extraordinary parentage isn’t what makes her new book, Earth to Moon, A Memoir, out today, so exceptional. There are none of the tropes we’ve come to expect from celebrity-offspring tell-alls — no recollections of violence, no revelations of sexual abuse, no descent into drug and alcohol addiction.

There are, naturally, celebrity encounters and friendships: Erik Estrada, Emilio Estevez, Whitney Houston, Michael J. Fox, Justine Bateman and Woody Harrelson are just a few of the big names who pop up in these pages.

But Earth to Moon is relatable to anyone who grew up feeling like they didn’t quite belong in this world — or even in their home.

“This book is really for anybody that felt like an outsider in life, and in their own family,” Moon, 56, tells PEOPLE. “So I think in that way, maybe it can be a universal kind of a story. It just so happens that the players in my story might be celebrities, or there might be extraordinary circumstances that maybe somebody else might not encounter … The book is also about how do you heal and take your own power back when you feel marginalized and demoralized in your own family?”

For Moon, the feeling of being on the outside looking in began with her physically and emotionally distant father, who died from prostate cancer in 1993, and her emotionally absent and abusive mother, Gail, who died in 2015. Those twin disappointments were, in a sense, the motivating factors that drove Moon to write the book.

Even its title was inspired by what her mother would often say to her right before reprimanding her or reminding her that the world did not revolve around her.

“I set out to do a couple of different things with the book,” Moon says. “One of the things was to ask, ‘Is genius worth the collateral damage to family, to your own life path?’ And then, the other thing I was really exploring was what happens when your mother is your first bully. And so those are two themes that I just was kind of trying to explore.”

Moon grew up in the San Fernando Valley (where she found inspiration for the stream-of-consciousness-monologue lyrics of “Valley Girl” in her female classmates), the oldest of Frank and Gail Zappa’s four children. Her siblings are Dweezil, 54, Ahmet, 50, and Diva, 44. Her dad spent most of his time on the road when she was growing up, and her mother, perhaps disappointed with her life as the wife of an unfaithful rock star who was barely around, took her frustrations out on the closest target: her daughter.

One of the most moving moments in the book is when Moon tries to reach out to her father as he lies in bed dying, to start saying all the things that have been unsaid — and he shuts her down.

“I am too sick to do this, Moon,” he says.

“I was gobsmacked,” she says. “I just didn’t think that we wouldn’t resolve everything, because I had a very different relationship with my father [than with my mother]. He never raised his voice once. He was always very direct. He didn’t give time and space for your feelings, but I thought, ‘Okay, he’s home now. This is it. This is the home stretch. If not now, when?’”

“And so I just thought I at least want to apologize for anything I might’ve done, because I thought that I had done something wrong, because the relationship was so unsatisfying to me, and I thought it was me,” Moon continues. “I didn’t realize until much later that that’s just what he chose to do, to just answer to his own creative urges and follow that path, come hell or high water. And on the one hand, I was grateful that he was exactly who he was, nothing hidden, but I didn’t really enjoy not also having my needs met. That’s not a great formula for raising kids, and it doesn’t set a person up well in the rest of their life.”

She never resolved things with her mother either, or tell her “first bully” how much emotional damage she had done.

“At the moment that she became ill [with lung cancer], all of the things that I struggled with, I wanted to confront her, but she was at her most vulnerable,” Moon recalls. “And so it seemed that I would be causing a cruelty to really let her have it and say, ‘Here’s all the things that you did that really hurt me.’”

Gail did, however, ask Moon for forgiveness. In a way, an apology without any acknowledgment of why she was sorry or what she had done made things worse, the author recalls.

“What was so awful for me, that I still have nightmares about,” Moon says, “is just this idea that she asked for forgiveness without telling me everything she had done, because at the moment that she became ill, I thought, ‘Okay, there’s an end date on her cruelty, so I can have the endurance to see her through this difficult time, and to reconcile my feelings on my own.’”

But that end date never came. In one final twist of the knife, after Gail’s death, Moon and Dweezil discovered that their mother’s will gave Ahmet and Diva majority control of the Zappa family’s trust — as well as Frank’s creative and financial legacy.

“Once I knew that she asked for forgiveness but didn’t tell me everything that she had done, and she stole my forgiveness, and I was left with my rage, and her wishing me unwell forever, that is something I take to the punching bag, to the mountain and scream,” Moon says. “I’m still like, ‘What?’ I beat her up in dreams. It’s still an ongoing process.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly then, the central relationship in Moon’s memoir isn’t her relationship with her iconic father, but with her mother. In asking the question “Is genius worth the collateral damage?” she is, in a sense, extending grace to Gail. That has been a huge part of her journey toward healing, especially as a mom herself, to daughter Mathilda, 19, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Matchbox Twenty drummer Paul Doucette.

“I had a lot of empathy for Gail, because she was on her own for so much of the time, and dealing with all the business stuff, and dealing with all of us,” Moon says. “And so I understand how challenging that can be. But also, as a parent, part of my healing has been giving my kid what I didn’t receive, and also seeing how easy it is to say sorry when you make a mistake. And so in some ways, I was both angrier later on, and also I had more compassion. So it’s again this paradox of, ‘Wow, I see how hard it was for her’ and ‘Why didn’t she just say sorry, or ask for help, or get help, and on, and on, and on.’”

So if her father were still around, what would she want to tell him? “I wish I’d spent more time with you,” Moon responds without missing a beat.

And what would she say to Gail? Moon ponders the question for several moments before responding: “That’s a tough one. I think I would say, ‘I understand you.’”

Taylor Swift breaks silence after Donald Trump shares AI generated images claiming singer is endorsing him for 2024 election

Taylor Swift has hit back at Donald Trump’s apparent acceptance of her ‘support’ in his race for the White House, with insiders claiming she believes the Republican has ‘lost it.’

The Presidential candidate, 78, shared AI-generated posts on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday night suggesting he has gained the support of the Grammy-winner, 34, and her fans, known as ‘Swifties.’

Trump wrote ‘I accept’ alongside deepfake images showing women wearing shirts emblazoned with ‘Swifties For Trump,’ as well as a poster of the singer dressed like Uncle Sam and urging her fans to vote for the GOP nominee.

Although she has yet to publicly endorse a candidate ahead of this year’s election, a source close to Swift confirmed, unsurprisingly, that she will not be supporting Trump.

‘If she didn’t support him last time, she’s not going to support him now,’ they told DailyMail.com exclusively. ‘He’s clearly lost it. In more ways than one.’

It is unclear if Trump’s comment is referring to the AI-generated crowd of ‘Swifties’ or the fake endorsement from Swift.

Two of the photos in Trump’s post are reportedly legitimate, Wisconsin Right Now reported.

Should Taylor Swift sue Donald Trump for the fake images?

Jenna Piwowarczyk, a 19-year-old Trump supporter who is also a fan of the singer, did allegedly wear a ‘Swifties for Trump’ t-shirt during a campaign rally in Wisconsin.

However, there does not actually appear to be a huge ‘Swifties for Trump’ following, as depicted in the AI-generated photos, which were clearly labelled ‘satire.’

Trump later doubled down on the claim that he was gaining the support of Swifties, sharing a video of an apparent MAGA fan saying the ‘Swifties were waking up’ after a failed terror plot resulted in the cancellation of the Austrian leg of the Eras Tour. It is unclear if the video is authentic.

Swift has previously criticized the GOP nominee and vowed to ‘vote [him] out’ ahead of the 2020 election after being left ‘completely blindsided’ by his 2016 victory.

Ahead of his defeat of Hillary Clinton, Swift kept quiet on her political leanings leading some to suspect she was actually a secret Republican.

But during the 2018 midterms, she voiced strong support for Tennessee Democrats including Senate candidate Phil Bredesen and House candidate Jim Cooper.

She explained in an Instagram post: ‘In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now.

‘I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country.’

In 2020, the Blank Space singer came out in full support of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

‘I will proudly vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in this year’s presidential election,’ she said. ‘Under their leadership, I believe America has a chance to start the healing process it so desperately needs,’ she said in an interview with V Magazine ahead of the election.’

She also tagged Trump in an X post blasting him: ‘After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence? ‘When the looting starts the shooting starts’??? We will vote you out in November.’

In her documentary, Miss Americana, which came out in 2020, Swift addressed her decision to speak publicly about politics further saying: ‘I need to be on the right side of history.’

Swift has been a close ally of the LGBTQ community. She also slammed the United States Supreme Court after it overturned Roe v Wade ending the constitutional right to an abortion in 2022.

The Anti-Hero hitmaker is suspected to be among the Hollywood A-listers who could appear at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago this week, CNN reported, with rumors she could also perform.

The Swifties have mobilized to throw their support behind Vice President Kamala Harris with the ‘@Swifties4Kamala’ X account already attracting 60,000 followers.

The Democratic National Committee has also already seemingly paid homage to Swift by announcing there will be stations where DNC attendees can make friendship bracelets – which are traded by Swifties at concerts and fan meet-ups.

The New York Times reported earlier this year that Joe Biden’s campaign had been actively seeking Swift’s endorsement.

Trump has previously questioned whether Swift is ‘legitimately liberal’ or if it’s all an act.

The former president discussed the megastar in an interview with Variety co-Editor-in-Chief Ramin Setoodeh for his book Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass which was released in June.

‘She is liberal, or is that just an act?’ Trump asked. ‘She’s legitimately liberal? It’s not an act?’

He added: ‘It surprises me that a country star can be successful being liberal.’
