Tina Louise became a superstar overnight as she starred as Ginger in the hit television show Gilligan’s Island. The New York native became a great actress, singer, and model. Though, she was often praised for her looks and not necessarily for her work on screen.

Today, Louise is the only cast member of Gilligan’s Island who still is alive. The show changed her life forever, but her career didn’t only consist of acting. The now 90-year-old is still going strong – and when you see her today, you’ll have a hard time believing she isn’t a few decades younger!

Let’s look at her magnificent life, career, and what she looks like today.

Tina Louise was born Tina Blacker on February 11, 1934, in New York City. Her father owned a candy store, and her mother worked as a fashion model.

Tina Louise – early life & career

When Tina was only four years old, her parents divorced, which made her childhood rather complicated.

“My path was very unusual. I lived with a lot of different cousins and aunts and strangers and so forth and so on, sort of a gypsy kind of a childhood,” she told Authority Magazine in 2019.

When growing up, Tina didn’t have any big dreams of working in the entertainment industry. Though, just weeks before she was to attend Miami University, everything changed.

“I saw a friend of mine who had gotten a part in a play on Broadway and he was the same age as me and I was very impressed,” Tina Louise told Authority Magazine.

“My mother took me backstage and I just really enjoyed it,” she continued. “And the very fact that my friend was in it gave me a little push to just proceed. I told my mother that I wanted to leave the University because the drama department wasn’t sufficient for me.”

Tina’s mother knew her daughter wanted to pursue a career in the drama department and honored her request. She began attending the Neighborhood Playhouse in Manhattan, New York, which she said “was, and still is, a wonderful school. “

While Tina Louise studied and perfected her craft at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, she also began modeling. Moreover, she was working as a nightclub singer. In 1952, she made her Broadway debut in the Bette Davis musical Two’s Company. At that point, her looks fascinated people, and she even appeared in Playboy Magazine.

In 1957, Tina Louise released her first music album, It’s Time for Tina. She continued working in theater and got some smaller parts in movies. However, in 1958, her life changed.

Breakthrough role in ‘God’s Little Acre

Her role as Griselda Walden in the drama film God’s Little Acre made her a Hollywood star. The movie received excellent reviews – and Tina Louise ended up taking home the Golden Globe Award for the New Star of the Year.

“It was incredible,” she told Forbes. “The movie ended up in the Venice Film Festival. I went abroad. There were all these people around taking care of me. I didn’t have to worry about anything. We sat in the theater, and I got bright red roses [laughs]. I’m saying, ‘Why did you give me roses? You should give them to the writer, the director – somebody else.’”

Instead of accepting Hollywood roles, Tina Louise went her own way. After God’s Little Acre, she focused on her Broadway work and also starred in some Italian films. In 1962, when returning from Europe, Louise started studying with Lee Strasberg at the Actor’s Studio.

“Everything Lee Strasberg said was important. He’d pick up your arm and see if—and how — it would drop to determine the level of relaxation in your body and spirit,” Louise told Esquire. “He’d say, ‘Make a sound.’ Some people would start to laugh and that would sometimes turn to tears. You didn’t have to be sad — it all came from deep relaxation.”

She continued, “I learned a lot from Lee about deep relaxation to get at something you were working toward. And then I found myself on Gilligan’s Island, where somebody’s telling you, ‘Go to the right.’ ‘Go to the left.’ That was an adjustment.”

Gilligan’s Island would make Tina Louise into somewhat of a Hollywood legend. Before landing the role, she was performing with Carol Burnett in the Broadway musical comedy Fade Out-Fade In. However, when Louise read the script, she wasn’t convinced it was a role for her.

Initially, in the pilot, her role as Ginger was played by Kit Smythe. But when they decided to make her quit the bombshell character, Tina Louise was the answer.

The stress explained that Ginger was “part Marilyn [Monroe], part Lucille [Ball]..” In the beginning, she felt the scripts were “snarky.” But after a while, she realized it was “light and funny and charming.”

“I always had fun with the show. Ginger flirted. Flirting is fun! Flirting is good;” Louise told the NY Post.

Tina Louise stayed on the CBS sitcom for all three seasons and a total of 98 episodes. Although her role was adored, she never reprised it on any reunion for television or movies over the years.

For decades, and still to this day, fans have approached her and sent letters, thanking her for her incredible portrayal of Ginger.

“I get letters every day at my house. I appreciate the fact that they love the series. I once had somebody come up to me in a restaurant, she said she was sorry to interrupt, but that her husband was dying of cancer and liked to look at the show every single day,” Tina Louise said.

“That was very, very important. I respect the fact that people like it so much. I understand that for myself – when you need diversion, you need diversion. When I was on my bed for two-and-a-quarter months [recuperating], I needed diversion. Fortunately, there was the reality show of an election that was really getting heated. I was grateful for that, the books I read and the people that came by.”

“The writers didn’t want us to get off the Island”

Even though the series became very successful, it “only” lasted for three seasons. So what happened? According to Tina, it was an executive decision.

“The writers didn’t want us to get off the Island,” Louise explained. “The show was in the Top 10 or 20 when it ended. The [network] president wasn’t happy [with the 1967] schedule. He wanted Gunsmoke to come back on. So they took our show off,” she added. “In syndication, it just went on and on and on … and on and on and on.

“When it did end I just got back to what I was doing. Which was more dramatic roles,” she added.

Tina Louise continued her successful career both in acting and in music. She starred in the television series Kojak in 1974, and other roles include the 1975 movie The Stepford Wives, the 1987 comedy OC and Stiggs, and the rockabilly satire film Johnny Sue in 1992, starring Brad Pitt.

Even though she had reached retirement age, Tina would not stop with her passion. In 2014, she starred in the spiritual drama Tapestry, and other things became more interesting.

Beginning with her Sunday: A Memoir book in 1997, Tina Louise has written several books. Her children’s book When I Grow Up in 2007 was very special, as she donated some of the proceeds to literacy programs. Moreover, Louise has been volunteering at local public schools since 1996.

She is an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences member and a lifetime member of the Actors Studio. But while the recognitions are very special to her, she has sadly seen many of her colleagues pass away over the years. Tina Louise is the last living cast member of Gilligan’s Island. In 2020, her former Gilligan’s Island castmate and friend, Dawn Wells, passed away from Covid-19.

“Dawn was a very wonderful person. I want people to remember her as someone who always had a smile on her face,” Louise told the New York Post. “Nothing is more important than family and she was family. She will always be remembered.”

“We were part of the wonderful show that everyone loves and has been a great source of comfort, especially during these times.”

Tina Louise was married to the late TV talk show host Les Crane for four years. The couple divorced in 1971, and together, they share a daughter, Caprice Crane, who’s moved on to become a producer, screenwriter, and novelist. Today, Tina has two grandchildren,” whom she calls “my two beautiful babies.”

“I’m open. I’m open. I’m open to life,” Louise said. “These days, I’m still not going out very far. If I go out with a friend, it’s once in two weeks.”

Meanwhile, she didn’t want to give her age when interviewed by the New York Post in 2021.

“Don’t number me. Who needs it?” Tina Louise added. “Numbers are not what you look like or how you live your life … Buddha said, ‘Live in the present moment. Wisely and earnestly.’”

According to new reports, Kim Kardashian is far from happy with the Bejeweled singer after reigniting a feud she thought was long buried.

Taylor, who is storming the world with her Eras Tour, was crowned TIME’s Person of the Year – and in the interview she mentioned the mental toll her fight with Kim K more than seven years ago took on her.

Kim is now reportedly so furious she’s ‘preparing for war’ with the Don’t Blame Me singer, and may even be plotting to take down her blossoming romance with Kansas City Chiefs star, Travis Kelce.

“Kim is incandescent with rage, and she’s come up with a plan to get her own back by using her connections in the sport world to break up Taylor and Travis,” the source told Heat.

“Kim can’t believe that she buried the hatchet with Taylor only to have her turn on her like this – she’s ready for war.”

The source goes on to say she could use her inner circle in the NFL to find out dirt on Taylor or Travis, and could even ‘torpedo’ the romance by figuring out a way to be photographed with Travis.

Kim is yet to make any mention of this publicly, with Travis yet to make any comment either about Kim.

The pair’s feud goes all the way back to 2016, when Kim’s then-husband Kanye West launched song Famous, which featured a lyric claiming responsibility for Taylor’s success.

The lyric was: “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that b***h famous.”

This stems from Kanye and Taylor’s awkward moment at the 2009 VMAs when, after Taylor won Best Music Video, Kanye stormed the stage and said Beyonce deserved it more.

In the Famous music video, a nude wax model of celebrities – including Taylor – was used to lie in bed next to Kanye.

Taylor spoke out against the video and the song lyric, but Kim then released an edited video on Snapchat supposedly showing Kanye call Taylor to get her approval. The video was clipped and didn’t mention the ‘b***h’ lyric, instead just the sex lyric.

It sparked an online fandom war over who was telling the truth and who was lying.

Speaking about the moment in her history, this year Taylor said in her TIME interview this year: “You have a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar.

“That took me down psychologically to a place I’ve never been before.”

At the time, Taylor expressed her dislike of the lyric. Kanye said that Taylor gave her consent to the lyric and Kim released a video that seemed to back her husband up.

Pat McAfee runs one of the biggest sports shows in the genre’s history. The former NFL punter talks all things sports, so when something is taking over the world, he will have something to say.

There is one issue, though, and it’s that McAfee uses some pretty strong wording on many topics. His show is owned by ESPN, so they say it’s a “no-go,” which is too bad for the 37-year-old talk show host.

McAfee may focus a lot on the NFL; however, in recent media, Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has been all the rage as she is completely taking over the WNBA, and surprisingly, McAfee isn’t allowed to speak on the star anymore.

McAfee was interviewing fellow sports show host Rich Eisen for Wednesday’s episode of the Pat McAfee Show when Caitlin Clark’s name came up in conversation. He quickly shut down the topic, seemingly confirming ESPN’s decision.

McAfee told Eisen, “The universe told me not to talk about her,” furthering his statement by adding, “You know, God came down and said you should probably go ahead and stop it.”

He then confirmed his stance on the Fever star, claiming he was and continues to be a big fan. However, his way of speaking sometimes gets him in trouble, referring to some controversial comments he made about her earlier in the season.

While he may not be allowed to speak about the WNBA’s newest and brightest star, fans can only hope that he will one day be able to talk about her again. His view of her remains positive, which could open up a future collaboration between the two.

The US Open has been very uncertain for the last 10-15 years and no player has won the title for two consecutive years since Roger Federer.

Caitlin Clark Is Unlikely To Bring Negative Attention To Herself By Diving Into Politics

Caitlin Clark has yet to endorse either candidate for the upcoming Presidential election.

The Democratic National Convention is taking place in Chicago this week, and a lot of people in the sports world are making it known who they are going for.

The Indiana Fever star hasn’t and likely will not do so.

Right now, everything she touches turns to gold, and coming out as either Republican or Democrat would hurt a lot.

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have had plenty to say on the equal pay issue in tennis with Aryna Sabalenka reigniting the debate after her tournament win.

Aryna Sabalenka has reignited her frustration over equal pay in tennis – a matter that Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have previously taken a stance on. The Belarusian star continued her impressive 2024 season as she picked up the Cincinnati Masters title after defeating Jessica Pegula 6-3 7-5 in the final as she heads into the US Open with ultimate confidence.

Following her victory, the 26-year-old decided to shine a light on the equal pay disparity that exists in tennis as she picked up $524,730 (£400,000) for winning the tournament which is half of what Jannik Sinner received for winning the men’s final with the Italian earning $1,049,460 (£775,000) for his triumph.

Sabalenka urged female players to be paid the same as men as she stated: “From the TV point of view, from the ticket selling, from every point of view, it’s unfair. Of course, guys are always going to be physically stronger than women but it doesn’t mean we’re not working as hard as they do. Women deserve to be paid an equal amount of money that men do.”

The conversation surrounding equal pay in tennis has long been a contentious topic and one that both Djokovic and Nadal have spoken on in the past. Both players previously argued against equal pay with the Serbian claiming that male players should fight for “more” money during the 2016 Indian Wells Masters.

Djokovic’s comments came on the back of the then-tournament CEO Raymond Moore sparking mass controversy by claiming that female players “ride on coattails of the men” and should “get on their knees and thank God” that players like Nadal and Roger Federer “carried” the sport.

The 37-year-old listed out his reasons as to why he believes that men should be rewarded more as he said: “I think that our men’s tennis world, ATP world, should fight for more because the stats are showing that we have much more spectators on the men’s tennis matches, I think that’s one of the reasons why maybe we should get awarded more” before backtracking on his stance a week later as he then said: “I never had an issue with equality in gender or sport or other areas of life.

“I feel very sorry if, in any way, I hurt my female colleague tennis players. I have a very good relationship with all of them. I have a huge respect for all of them.” Since his comments eight years ago, Djokovic has since become an advocate for equal pay as well as improved pay distribution for lower-ranked players and has actively worked to better it by creating the Professional Tennis Players Association in 2020 with Vasek Pospisil.

Nadal was another giant in the sport that argued against equal pay and in 2018, he told Italian magazine Lo Donna: “Female models earn more than male models, and nobody says anything. Why? Because they have a larger following. In tennis, too, who gathers a larger audience earns more.”

Six years on, the Spaniard has urged for the same opportunities to be given to both male and female players but claimed the prize money should be based on how much money a player generates, rather than it being equal across the board. “I don’t want to be hypocritical and say things that are easy to say and that I don’t feel. What do you want me to say? For me, the investment for women should be the same as for men,” the 22-time major champion said in a TV interview with La Sexta earlier this year.

“The opportunities, the same. The salaries, the same? No, for what? It’s not unfair, what’s unfair is that there isn’t equal opportunity. I have a mother and a sister. If you tell me that men and women deserve the same opportunities, I’m a feminist. This term is taken to the extreme. If we’re talking about logical and normal things in this conversation, of course I want equality.”

The 38-year-old admitted that it “bothers me” when he’s told that prize earnings must be equal for male and female players. “For me, equality isn’t about giving away gifts, but if Serena Williams earns more than me, I want her to earn more than me. I want equality, I want women to earn more than men if they generate more than men.

“What bothers me is when people tell me that income and earnings should be equal. In tennis, for some reason, the payouts are almost equal in most events because at the time there was an opportunity for women’s tennis to be seen.”
