Bad blood appears to abound between supporters for Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump heading into November’s tight presidential election. While both sides have enlisted varying degrees of star power at their respective national conventions, there appears to be one figure whose endorsement the two candidates seemingly covet: Taylor Swift.

Trump took to social media recently to share phony images generated by artificial intelligence suggesting that Swift and her fans support him, with the former president writing, “I accept!” Swift, who previously criticized Trump for “stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism,” has yet to endorse either candidate. But given that the pop superstar has asserted her position as one of the most widely known and popular entertainers on the planet with her record-breaking Eras Tour, it’s clear that her support would be heard.

As the female vote will be crucial in swaying the election, Swift’s endorsement could be crucial in influencing young female voters and reinforcing the notion that Harris, like [Barack] Obama before her, is presiding over the support of a movement rather than just a demographic in the national votes,” says Mark Wheeler, professor of political communications at London Metropolitan University and author of Celebrity Politics. “Clearly, Swift’s extraordinary popularity could bolster any candidate’s campaign, and her endorsement might indicate a significant shift in the narrative of the campaign.”

The tangible impact of any celebrity endorsement is difficult to quantify, given the numerous factors that could inform a voter’s choice. But in a close race like this one, experts note that influencing a small number of undecided voters in key battleground states could indeed move the needle, with Oprah Winfrey‘s endorsement of then-presidential candidate Obama in 2007 cited as a pivotal vote of confidence.

It’s the people in the middle — the undecided — that Swift has the most potential to affect,” says Mark Harvey, associate professor at the University of St. Mary and author of Celebrity Influence. “I think it’s going to be very, very marginal, but it could be pivotal in swing states where there may be a very tight margin.”

There was a time when it seemed that a political endorsement from Swift would never, ever come to fruition. The star did not endorse Hillary Clinton when she ran against Trump in 2016, and Swift received flak when she did not attend the Women’s March movement in January 2017, instead tweeting her support for it after the fact. (“Who is Taylor Swift voting for?” was a popular search topic ahead of the 2016 election.)

In October 2018, the singer endorsed two Democratic candidates running for Congress in her home state of Tennessee, and Swift’s support led to a surge in voter registration. Swift tweeted her support for then-nominee Joe Biden in October 2020 and noted that she was a major fan of Harris, his running mate. Both Swift and Beyoncé were the subjects of rampant social media speculation surrounding possible surprise appearances at this week’s Democratic National Convention, but neither attended.

David J. Jackson, professor of political science at Bowling Green State University and author of Entertainment & Politics, sees Swift’s endorsement value as high, due to her likability, the passion among her fan base and her position as a credible voice to her supporters. He also observes heightened impact coming from celebrities who appear to be more selective in the causes they publicly champion.

“[For] a celebrity who becomes known for being the political celebrity, each successive endorsement may carry less weight because more people then start to think, ‘That’s just that celebrity who’s always out there shilling for the Democrats or the Republicans,’” Jackson reasons. “Being selective, strategic and careful about your political statements as a celebrity probably magnifies their significance.”

In a USA Today/Suffolk University national poll from May (back when Biden was the presumptive Democratic candidate), Obama was shown to carry the most weight among public figures (34.6 percent of participants said he would influence their vote), followed closely by Michelle Obama. For prominent entertainers, 15.4 percent of respondents said that Winfrey (a surprise DNC speaker on Wednesday) would have influence over their vote, followed by Charles Barkley at 10.6 percent, Swift at 9.2 percent and Beyoncé — who sang at Obama’s 2013 inauguration and whose song “Freedom” has been a Harris anthem — at 7 percent.

For analysts, celebrity support that is perceived as more organic or subtle could carry extra value. Harvey praises Charli XCX posting last month that “Kamala IS brat” — referencing the singer’s recent album title — which led Harris’ team to change the campaign’s X (formerly Twitter) account to match the Brat branding. Harvey also cites Swift fans who — regardless of whether the singer makes her own political statement — have created the Swifties for Kamala organization to encourage networking, campaign donations and wearing pro-Harris friendship bracelets, given that the fashion accessory has become a staple at Swift’s shows.

While the exact power of celebrity support remains debatable, some involved in voter outreach underscore the continued importance of more tried-and-true methods.

“A little Tay can go a long way, but local organizers are still the best voter mobilizers,” says Zo Tobi of Movement Voter Project, a national progressive funding organization centering on empowering younger voters. “The whole election hinges on a few voters in a few states, and what persuadable voters need most is to hear from people they know, like and trust in their own community.”

While sitting on a plane, Travis looked into the camera and told his daughter, “Baby, I love you so much. Getting ready to take off.” Alabama included other shots of her dad looking sad and forlorn that he couldn’t be there in person to express his feelings.

“My dad is my hero. I couldn’t ask for a better man to be my father. I cried making this he is my everything. @Travis Barker,” Alabama gushed in the caption. Her dad wrote in the comments, “I love you to the moon and back,” along with a rocket emoji.

Fans melted over the video. One person wrote, “Bama, he gets the best dad award,” while another added, “My dad used to write notes. This is cute.” “I wanna cry this is so sweet,” a user commented.

Novak Djokovic experienced his earliest US Open defeat since 2006, falling to Alexei Popyrin in the third round. The Serb could not defend his title in New York or chase the 25th Major crown. However, he will not feel too much disappointed, claiming the Olympic Games gold medal less than a month ago and fulfilling his dream.

Finding the motivation just a couple of weeks later and seeking a Major crown proved difficult for the greatest player of all time, embracing a rare season without a notable trophy by his name. Still, his journey ended against an in-form Alexei Popyrin, with the Aussie toppling the legend 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in three hours and 19 minutes, delivering Djokovic’s earliest US Open loss in 18 years.

Popyrin took charge and controlled the pace with 50 winners and unforced errors. World no. 2 missed his chances in sets one and four, losing the pivotal points and suffering an early loss, the worst at Majors in seven and a half years.

Djokovic was off to a good start, serving well in the opening four service games and creating chances that could have sent him in front. The Aussie sprayed a forehand error in the sixth game, playing against five break points!

The veteran played a loose drop shot on the first, and that miss would cost him dearly. Alexei saved the remaining four with service winners, producing a crucial hold and remaining on the positive side. The Aussie fired a service winner on the first, rattling off ten points and wrapping up the opener 6-4 in 45 minutes. Alexei served well in the second set, keeping the pressure on Novak.

The defending champion held after deuces in the first game before experiencing more issues at 2-2. The lower-ranked player generated three break points with a fine lob and grabbed the third after the rival’s mistake, moving 3-2 in front and gaining confidence.

The 28th seed held in the next one with a forehand winner and brought the eighth game home after a deuce with a service winner for a 5-3 lead. Popyrin served for the set at 5-4 and landed a serve & volley combo, holding and building two sets to love advantage after an hour and a half.

Alexei pulled the break back in the fifth game after Novak’s loose backhand, returning to the positive side and closer to the finish line.

The Serb made another push on the return in game six, overcoming a 40-15 deficit and passing his rival at the net for a break and a 4-2 lead. The veteran fired a service winner in the seventh game and completed the set with another break at 5-2, reducing the overall deficit after two hours and 12 minutes.

The 28th seed saved two break points in the second game of the fourth set and created four break opportunities at 2-2. Djokovic denied three before Popyrin cracked a forehand winner on the fourth, opening a 3-2 advantage and roaring in joy.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s four-day tour of Colombia cost the country nearly £45,000, according to official figures from the vice-president who invited them.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit cost a total of Col$244,245,305 (£44,725.14), which included expenditure on security and internal transport throughout the trip.

The figure was released by Colombia’s vice-president Francia Marquez, who organised the trip, following a request by Senator Maria Fernanda Cabal.

Ms Cabal, who is her political opponent, previously branded the quasi-royal tour between August 15 and 18 as ‘showmanship’ and ‘wasteful spending’.

But the vice-president’s office also revealed that Harry and Meghan paid for their own flights and accommodation in Bogota as well as general expenses.

The total cost covered an eight-day period between August 12 and 19 because it also included advance visits from security and logistics staff, reported the Telegraph.

Among the amounts cited was a £7,500 security cost for engagements held in San Basilio de Palenque, which was established as the first free African town in the Americas in 1619.

Another total given was £4,500 for security in Cali, where Meghan and Harry posed for photos and enjoyed live entertainment from a youth organisation.

But Ms Marquez also confirmed there were no payments made by the country for air travel, accommodation or fees to the Sussexes, according to Colombian publication Semana.

The Sussexes were however given a full security detail throughout their visit alongside Ms Marquez, who said she was inspired to ask Harry and Meghan to come after being moved by their Netflix documentary.

Ms Marquez also described the Sussexes’ trip as a ‘very special visit’ aimed at building bridges and joining forces against cyber-bullying and online digital violence and discrimination, as well as promoting women’s leadership in Colombia.

Ms Marquez, a lawyer and human rights and environmental activist, is Colombia’s first black vice-president and serves in the country’s first left-wing government, led by president Gustavo Petro.

During their trip, Harry and Meghan visited a local school and joined a summit in collaboration with their Archewell Foundation about creating a healthier digital landscape.

The Sussexes also took part in a forum paying tribute to the contributions of Afro-Colombian women, leaders and entrepreneurs.

And Harry joined in a game of volleyball on a visit to Colombian Invictus Games athletes in Bogota.

Ensuring the couple’s security was a high priority during their stay. The Foreign Office warns against all but essential travel to certain parts of Colombia, with kidnapping rates remaining high.

It also describes the country as ‘seriously afflicted by conflict’ with a resurgence in violence in parts of Colombia despite the peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) movement to end the civil war.

The Duke has meanwhile maintained it is ‘still dangerous’ for Meghan to return to the UK.

Harry lost a High Court challenge against the Home Office in February over a decision to change the level of his personal security when he visits the UK, but he has been given the green light to appeal.

During the case, the court was told Harry believes his children cannot ‘feel at home’ in the UK if it is ‘not possible to keep them safe’ there and that he faces a greater risk than his late mother, with ‘additional layers of racism and extremism’.

Harry and Meghan stepped down from the working monarchy in 2020 and no longer travel at the request of the UK Government on official overseas royal visits, when travel costs would have usually been met by the taxpayer-funded Sovereign Grant.

Decked out in a tuxedo and top hat, the Kansas City Chiefs player joined Swift during her I Can Do It With a Broken Heart outfit change. The tight end beamed as he carried his girlfriend, gently placing her on a red couch at the center of the stage.

The love story between Taylor Swift and the National Football League is back for a second season … because the NFL is promoting the pop star more than the game’s best player.

The NFL just released a promo video for the 2024 season ahead of Thursday’s opening game, and Taylor has the lion’s share of screen time … making five appearances in a 28-second clip.

Taylor is shown more than any player in the league, and the NFL doesn’t show Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes until the very end … when he’s seen hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The promo video is a look back at the 2023 season, which became all about Taylor when she started dating Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce … and the NFL is going back to their golden goose here as they look ahead.

Among Taylor’s five appearances … two celebrations with Kelce’s mom Donna; arriving at a game with a custom Chiefs jacket; kissing Travis on the field and chugging a beer at the Super Bowl.

Travis and Patrick both said recently Taylor’s a big football fan and is drawing up plays for the Chiefs … and it’s clear she’s got some major influence at NFL HQ.
