Garth Brooks and wife Trisha Yearwood performed John Lennon’s “Imagine” during President Jimmy Carter’s funeral in Washington D.C. on Thursday (Jan. 9).

Few criticized the actual performance. In fact, almost everyone who watched the moment praised Brooks and Yearwood’s delivery inside of the Washington National Cathedral.

Their close personal relationship with President Carter and his late wife Rosalynn made Brooks and Yearwood great candidates for a tribute. Together, the two couples worked for Habitat for Humanity’s Carter Work Project for decades, and the late president spoke often about how much he adored Yearwood’s voice.

The problem was the song.

Other performances came from the Cathedral Choir (“The Road Home”), Phyllis Adams and Lilia Boden (“Amazing Grace”) and the U.S. Marine Orchestra and Armed Forces Choir (“Eternal Father, Strong to Save”).

President Joe Biden eulogized Carter, while Steve Ford — son to late President Gerald Ford — read a tribute written by his dad.

All living former presidents attended.

Reactions to Garth Brooks’ Version of “Imagine” at Jimmy Carter’s Funeral

“I cannot imagine a less fitting pick to honor such a faithful man,” says Jack Backes on X.

“One of the worst songs that could’ve been played at a funeral,” adds @MilitaryMama17. “He was a Christian, but somewhere along the line they thought it was a good idea that this song would’ve been appropriate. Do you not understand the words?”

“Beyond bad taste,” shares another.

The problem is lyrics that go, “Imagine there’s no Heaven / It’s easy if you try.”

For what it’s worth, Lennon also imagined no hell, countries, reason to fight and kill, etc. … this was considered a song of peace and unity at the time and still is today.

“You may say I’m a dreamer / But I’m not the only one / I hope someday you’ll join us / And the world will live as one.”

Not everyone was bothered by the message. Here is a sampling of the more positive messages, plus an explanation for why “Imagine” was chosen.

Others called it “perfect” or labeled the performance “beautiful.”

The short version of why Brooks and Yearwood sang Lennon’s “Imagine” is that it was one of Jimmy Carter’s all-time favorite songs. Some have indicated that Carter chose the song himself, although we’ve not found confirmation of that anywhere.

Fourteen months ago, Brooks and Yearwood took the stage to sing the same song for Rosalynn Carter, although in that instance, Yearwood took lead.

President Jimmy Carter died on Dec. 29, 2024. He was 100 years old.

George Strait has sold his one-of-a-kind, custom-built estate in Texas after several years of trying to find a buyer.

According to online listings, Strait’s 7,925-square-foot adobe mansion on a hilltop in one of San Antonio’s most exclusive communities sold at the end of 2021 after several years of price drops. The Real Deal real estate website reported in January of 2022 that Strait had sold his home to Shannon Ralson, who owns a medical staffing company in San Antonio called Angel Staffing Inc.

Strait originally listed the estate for $10 million in 2018 before reducing the price to $8.9 million in 2019.

The country music icon reduced the price again to $7.5 million in January of 2021 and dropped to $6.9 million that October. The final selling price has not been publicly disclosed.

Renowned architect Bill Tull from Arizona designed the castle-like 3-bedroom, 4-bathroom residence, which also includes two half-baths. Each bedroom is an en suite with its own separate bathroom and fireplace. The main house also includes an infinity pool and spa and a sports court, a workout room with a private bathroom and sauna and a walk-in safe room.

The luxurious estate also features a gourmet kitchen, separate his and her bathrooms and closets and 14 hand-sculpted masonry fireplaces. The primary residence is wired for surround sound throughout. Outdoor living spaces include a patio with built-in grill, sink, icemaker and refrigerator.

Strait’s staggering former mansion sits on 12.2 acres of land, and the ultra-private property also features a separate “casita” guest house that is entirely self-contained, with one bedroom, one bathroom, living room, kitchenette and fireplace.

Parker McCollum has some big Texas boots to fill when it comes to becoming a legend from the Lone Star State. After all, for lots of country fans, Texas has always and will always belong to the King, George Strait.

In a recent interview with CMT, McCollum was asked what he has learned most from being in the presence of Strait in the past, and his response was truly eye-opening.

“What influenced me as a kid and still does to this day more than George’s music, is the way he carries himself behind the scenes, off the stage, as a family man and a husband.”

McCollum, a young married man with an infant child, kind of reminds us of a young Strait as well. McCollum is always a perfect gentleman behind the scenes.

McCollum has been a guest on Taste of Country Nights multiple times, and every single time, he takes off his hat when greeting a woman in his presence and always has the utmost respect for both women and men, at all times.

The “Pretty Heart” singer’s musical career is starting out on the right track as well, with multiple number ones already under his belt, he is well on his way to making a large dent in country music.

When McCollum was a guest on Taste of Country Nights, he revealed that he refers to Strait, in person, as Mr. Strait, and he still clams up and gets nervous when he is around the King.

But, to be fair, we all probably would get nervous if in Strait’s presence too.

Justin Timberlake sold his entire music catalog for $100 million

Justin Timberlake sold his entire song catalog in a deal that was said to be worth $100 million.

According to The Guardian, Justin Timberlake is partnering with Hipgnosis Song Management, a $1 billion fund backed by private equity firm Blackstone. Hipgnosis Song Management offers investors the opportunity to earn royalties from the work of various artists such as Barry Manilow and Beyonce.

The deal between the former NSYNC star and the agency gives them 100% control and ownership of Justin’s stake in the more than 200 songs he has co-written.

“I am delighted to be working with Merck and Hipgnosis – he values artists and their creative work and has always been a strong advocate for musicians…” – Justin shared in a statement – “I look forward to seeing this next chapter”

Founder and CEO of Hipgnosis, Merck Mercuriadis said: “Justin Timberlake is not only one of the most influential artists of the last 20 years, but he is also one of the greatest musicians of all time.”

“His popular songs include “Cry Me a River”, “Rock Your Body”, “SexyBack”, “My Love”, “What Goes Around… “Comes Around”, “Suit & Tie”, “Mirrors” and “Can’t Stop the Feeling” are among the most iconic of the period.”
