Iconic rock album cover designer Ioannis Vasilopoulos has died at the age of 66.

His family announced the sad news of his death in an emotional obituary shared to an online tributes page.

The statement read: ‘We announce with heavy hearts the passing of Ioannis, our beloved artist, husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend, who has left us for the great beyond.

‘We find comfort knowing that Ioannis is reunited with his father, mother and other beloved family and friends. The outpouring of love for Ioannis and his work is also a great comfort.

‘There were so many things Ioannis wanted to do and so many new projects he could not wait to share,’ it went on.

‘As a family we have been tasked to continue this work and that is what we are going to do. His energy will live on through his incredible art.

Ioannis has been survived by his wife Lisa, daughter Maria and son-in-law Conor, grandchildren Henry and Jack, brother George and other close family members.

His family and friends are gathering for an intimate funeral at a Greek Orthodox Church on Friday April 11 to pay their respects to the beloved music figure.

Ioannis was born in Athens, Greece, and emigrated to the United States as a child in 1967, where he first found his love of animation and music.

He found his passion for designing album covers and designed his first record while he was still in college, before directing his first MTV music video for Art In America.

He designed more than 350 record covers for major bands including Bon Jovi, Deep Purple, Skid Row, Blue Oyster Cul and Starship, among many others.

Ioannis has also worked with Sony Music, Universal Music, Starz, Virgin Records and many classic rock radio stations on other big projects.

He his artwork also featured in a book about Led Zeppelin, titled Get the Led Out, alongside Martin Popoff, which was written by Denny Somach.

The designer showcased his work at many shows around the US and continued to sell his artwork globally until his death.

Tributes rolled in for the artist from his famous friends and fans as people took to social media to share their support with his family.

Patrick Prince, editor of Goldmine Magazine, shared: ‘Ioannis was a wonderfully generous person and a dear friend.

‘His talent as an artist was limitless. He had more passion than any artist I’ve met and significantly cherished his work with rock and roll bands.

‘It didn’t matter if his artwork was commissioned for The Allman Brothers Band or a local band down the street, he gave 100 per cent dedication to the project representing that specific artist.’

Pilot in Hudson River Helicopter Crash Was Navy SEAL Veteran Who Dreamed of Flying, Wife Says

The wife of the pilot who was flying the helicopter that crashed into the Hudson River is sharing details about the former Navy SEAL veteran.

“ I’m just at a loss for words. I don’t even know what happened,” Kathryn Johnson told Gothamist about the accident that killed her husband, Sean Johnson, and a family of five that was visiting New York City on Thursday, April 10.

The city is shaken after numerous people witnessed the aviation accident on the New Jersey side of the river around 3:15 p.m. local time. Agustín Escobar, chief executive of Siemens’ rail infrastructure division in Spain, his wife Merce Camprubi Montal and their three young children all died.

The family was visiting from Spain and was celebrating Merce’s birthday before the tragedy occurred. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed in a press conference on Friday, April 11.

As the investigation continues, friends and families of those who died are trying to grapple with the news.

Johnson had recently moved to New York City to continue his career as a pilot, Gothamist reported. While Sean and Kathyrn had been separated for the last few months, they were still close and had last spoken to each other the day before the crash, she told the outlet. Kathryn learned about her husband’s death from one of his colleagues.

“It’s just hard right now,” she further noted.

The NTSB confirmed on Friday that Johnson held a commercial pilot certificate and reported 450 hours of total flight experience on his most recent medical report filed in 2024. As of March 29, he’d accumulated approximately 780 hours of total flight time.

Before he became a pilot, Sean also worked on a TV show and was a celebrity bodyguard, his wife told Gothamist. She said he “always wanted to fly.”

According to his Facebook page, Sean, who was originally from Chicago, attended Southern Utah University as he studied to become a commercial pilot from 2021 to 2023. In a Facebook post, Sean shared a video of himself flying over the New York City skyline. “When it all comes together,” wrote Sean. He was flying a Bell 206 helicopter for the tour company New York Helicopters when the crash occurred.

A nearby runner saw the moment of impact, telling WABC that he heard what sounded like a “sonic boom.’

“Literally I just see a helicopter splitting in two with the rotor flying off in the sky,” he said, referring to the blades atop the craft that give it lift.

The company’s CEO, Michael Roth, told The Telegraph that the pilot of the aircraft radioed base to say they were returning to the helipad to get more fuel shortly before the crash.

“He [the pilot] called in that he was landing and that he needed fuel, and it should have taken him about three minutes to arrive, but 20 minutes later, he didn’t arrive,” Roth said, adding that the company is reeling from the ordeal.

“Every employee in our company is devastated. My wife has not stopped crying,” he added. “The death of the child of any human being, is a monumental disaster.”

PEOPLE could not immediately reach New York Helicopters for further comment on the incident. PEOPLE also reached out to the New Jersey Medical Examiner for comment, but they did not immediately respond.

A Navy spokesperson tells PEOPLE, “We extend our deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy, including the loved ones of our former shipmate.”

Meanwhile, a person who knew Sean from his time with the SEALs wrote a tribute to his friend on Instagram.

“Sean came from very humble beginnings — but he never let that define or limit him,” wrote Remi Adeleke. “If anything, it fueled him. He had a quiet determination, a spirit of resilience, and a heart that always looked out for others.”

In 1989, Bon Jovi were pretty much the biggest rock band in the world. But were they really responsible for MTV’s Unplugged series?

Let’s rewind to 6 September 1989 and the MTV Video Music Awards, staged at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles.

It was a truly star-studded event, at which the biggest winners were Madonna and Paula Abdul, both of whom scooped up four awards.

For Michael Jackson it wasn’t such a great night. The self-styled King Of Pop had the most nominations – nine in total – but carried off only one award for Best Special Effects in the video for Leave Me Alone.

Madonna and Paula Abdul were also among the many artists who performed live at the event.

Other notable performances included Axl Rose singing with Tom Petty on the latter’s Free Fallin’, and Def Leppard making their last live appearance with guitarist Steve Clark before his death in 1991.

But most memorable of all was the short acoustic set from the two leading stars of Bon Jovi – singer Jon Bon Jovi and guitarist Richie Sambora.

They played just two songs. Two monster hits. A brief version of Livin’ On A Prayer and then Wanted Dead Or Alive.

The truth is that MTV already had the Unplugged series in production by the time of the 1989 awards show.

The first Unplugged episode aired in November 1989 and featured Squeeze, singer-songwriter Syd Straw and The Cars’ guitarist Elliot Easton.

Later episodes in the first series featured Sinead O’Connor, Aerosmith, Stevie Ray Vaughan and more.

So it’s not as if Jon Bon Jovi and guitarist Richie Sambora invented the Unplugged format on that night in ’89.

But it was a great performance that surely convinced the powers at MTV of the value in Unplugged.

And it also suggested that the guy sitting next to Jon Bon Jovi might just have been the best singer in the band…

Toms River Mayor Daniel Rodrick had some choice words for the star’s JBJ Soul Kitchen pop-up that opened in February.

A New Jersey mayor has some harsh words for Jon Bon Jovi’s charitable initiative.

The rock band frontman, 63, and his wife, Dorothea, launched the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation together back in 2006, with the goal of ending hunger and homelessness.

In their pursuit of the altruistic mission, the couple opened the JBJ Soul Kitchen, a New Jersey-based nonprofit restaurant that has a pay-it-forward model to accommodate all socioeconomic backgrounds.

As stated on its official website, “It is not a pay-what-you-want model or a soup kitchen,” as customers pay for their meals (the suggested price is $12) and are given the opportunity to pay for someone else’s meal, assisting those who can’t pay and instead volunteered their time.

The first restaurant opened in 2011 in Red Bank and then expanded to Toms River, Newark (a permanent location in Rutgers University) and Jersey City (a permanent location in New Jersey City University).

In February, per CBS News, the restaurant opened a temporary pop-up location stationed inside Tom River’s Ocean County Library, which is set to shut down in May. And while most residents praise the star’s commitment to and care of the Jersey communities, Toms River Mayor Daniel Rodrick has a different opinion on the set-up.

The mayor reportedly believes the restaurant is driving up the homeless population in the town by encouraging unhoused individuals across New Jersey, and even neighboring states, to congregate around the eatery.

According to NJ Advance Media, Rodrick stated, “If they’re going to turn this into a homeless shelter, hell, cut everybody a check and give them a Barnes and Noble gift card.”

“I definitely want it gone,” the mayor continued. “We certainly don’t think that the library is a good place. The issue was never Bon Jovi. It was [the] Ocean County Board of Commissioners who engaged with these nonprofits.”

Though the mayor also called the pop-up “a real safety concern,” Ocean County Commissioner Robert Arace pushed back against the mayor’s claims that any alarming incidents have occurred because of the JBJ Soul Kitchen.

“He’s saying that incidents have increased?” Arace questioned. “We have data that they have not increased. It is not a soup kitchen.”

Mayor Daniel Rodrick and The Ocean County Board of Commissioners both did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

To date, JBJ Soul Kitchen has served over 208,000 meals, with 59 percent of the meals earned through customers volunteering and 41 percent paid with donations, per its official website.

Despite the mayor’s sentiments, the JBJ Soul Foundation and the JBJ Soul Kitchen are beloved by notable names and A-list stars.

Back in 2016, during the 10th anniversary of the foundation, former President Bill Clinton praised the eatery and the singer’s efforts to combat food insecurity.

“I came here to add my voice of thanks to Jon and Dorothea, who house the homeless and feed the hungry. And remind us all that underneath our differences, we’re not so different after all,” said the 42nd president. “If you have not eaten there, you ought to treat yourself.”

In 2020, Bon Jovi opened up about their philanthropic efforts, telling PEOPLE, “If we could put a roof over someone’s head or put food in their belly, it’s quite simple: We don’t need a scientist to find the cure.”

The JBJ Soul Kitchen and a rep for Bon Jovi did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
