The cast of The Breakfast Club is back together — 40 years after that fateful detention day.

Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall and Emilio Estevez reunited on April 12 during a panel at C2E2, a pop culture convention in Chicago, to reminisce with fans over John Hughes’s 1985 coming-of-age film. The panel was moderated by Josh Horowitz.

“I feel very emotional and moved to have us all together,” said Ringwald, who played the film’s iconic high school “princess” Claire Standish.

Ringwald, 57, also noted that the convention marked the first time Estevez, 62, has joined them, joking that “We don’t have to use the cardboard cutout anymore. I feel really moved that we’re all together.”

The Brat Pack: Where Are They Now?

Addressing his past absence, Estevez, who played athlete Andrew Clark, explained, “I felt that I needed to do it for myself.”

The actor also explained that the reunion felt “special” given the location of the convention as the movie was famously shot at a high school in the Chicago suburbs.

Elsewhere in the panel, Hall, 56, and Ringwald revealed whether they had to audition for their roles in the classic movie after having starred in Hughes’s Sixteen Candles the year prior.

“John just called up and said, ‘I want you to come in.’ He didn’t have a script. He didn’t give me a script,” Hall, who played brainiac Brian Johnson, said. The actor added that Hughes was just asking him questions, such as, “What do you think about this? What do you think about that?”

Ringwald, however, had a different experience with the legendary filmmaker. “Originally, he was gonna do The Breakfast Club before he did Sixteen Candles,” she said of Hughes. “And then he wrote Sixteen Candles … and turned it into the studio and they said, ‘Oh, we wanna do that one first.’ ”

She continued, “So they put The Breakfast Club on hold and then, from my understanding, John Cusack was gonna play Bender and Joan Cusack was going to play Allison, I don’t know who was gonna play the other parts. And then after Sixteen Candles, he gave me the script.”

Molly Ringwald Reunites with Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Anthony Michael Hall 40 Years After The Breakfast Club

It wasn’t too long ago that part of the cast including Ringwald, Sheedy, Nelson and Hall met up. In fact, they recently were featured in another panel discussion at MegaCon Orlando on Feb. 7.

During that panel, Ringwald said the appeal of the movie for her was that she got to enjoy a different high school experience from her own.

“Whenever I got to do a movie I got to leave my school and that was amazing,” the actress said. However, the part didn’t totally get her out of school: Ringwald and Hall attended classes on set, she said during the panel. “We’d go do a scene in the library and then study algebra with our studio teacher. But it was fun.”

Sheedy, who played Allison Reynolds, the “basket case” in the movie, reminisced on how close the cast became during the filming.

“I was really happy when we were making this movie, we all really … I don’t know if you can tell but we all really do love each other. It was a dream,” Sheedy said. “A joyful experience.”

They all had their own ideas of where the future could have taken their characters following high school graduation too.

“I think Bender is clearly the principal of the school,” Nelson, 65, said, receiving laughter from the crowd when referencing his rebellious character, John Bender.

“I think Allison would’ve ended up being a writer, maybe a professor, something intellectual,” Sheedy mused.

Ringwald on the other hand, thought Claire would have taken her own, more experimental path.

“I think that Claire probably got married a few times,” Ringwald said to the crowd. “And maybe decided she liked women. You know, her kids are grown up, she’s like, ‘Okay I’ll try that.’ It didn’t work out so well with the guys.”

However, despite fans’ hopes for a sequel, the group said another film was not in the foreseeable future for them out of respect for the late Hughes, who directed the classic and several other films of that time.

“It was something that was conjured and thought about,” Hall shared, referencing one of his last conversations with the film’s director. And while he and his costars were enthused on the idea, they agreed they wouldn’t do it without Hughes at the helm.

Ringwald opened up about her relationship with Hughes during an interview with U.K. outlet The Times in April 2024.

“They were all really fun movies to make,” she told The Times. “Sixteen Candles, the first movie I made with the director John Hughes, in 1984, was filmed during the summer. He would just let the camera roll and we would improvise. It was a very free, creative experience.”

In 2015, Ringwald told PEOPLE that making The Breakfast Club was “a great experience,” adding, “I was really loving the work that I was doing.”

After her grandmother died when she was 16, Tina followed her mother to St. Louis. It was there where she got involved in the music scene and met her future husband, Ike Turner.

In 1965, during a performance with his former band, Kings of Rhythm, Ike called on the then-17-year-old Tina to sing onstage. Enamored by her innate stage presence and raspy vocals, Ike was keen to develop her budding talent and allowed her to hang around the band.

Preparation met opportunity when the singer who was booked to record “A Fool in Love” didn’t show up for the recording session, and Tina rose to the occasion.

“A Fool in Love” was an instant hit and Ike realized he needed Tina in his troupe. He changed her name to Tina Turner and she became the lead vocalist for what became known as Ike & Tina Turner Revue.

Though Ike and Tina’s relationship was platonic at first, with Tina admitting in the HBO Max documentary, Tina, she viewed him as a big brother, their connection gradually escalated to romance and they got married in 1962.

But their union was no sweeping love story. For one, the pair got married in Tijuana in a ceremony the “Proud Mary” singer found out about the same day.

“When Ike asked me to marry him, I knew it was for a reason,” she told Gayle King in an interview for CBS Good Morning. “But I had to say yes, I knew, or it was going to be a fight.”

Ike was famously abusive and the marriage ultimately ended in divorce 16 years later.

Tina Turner’s ‘Proud Mary’

While the association between “Proud Mary” and Tina is indelible, the song is actually not an original Ike and Tina record.

According to Biography.com, the song was written by John Fogerty, lead singer of the band Creedence Clearwater Revival, in 1967 and became a crowd favorite when Ike and Tina Turner Revue would perform.

As the duo was working on their second album, Workin’ Together, Tina suggested Ike add the song since it had so much success on the road. Ike added the famed guitar riffs and other production elements to make it the hit we know today.

“Proud Mary” reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 5 on the R&B chart in 1971, Biography.com reports. The song sold more than 1 million copies and earned the duo a Grammy Award for best R&B vocal performance by a group.

In 1976, Tina filed for divorce from Ike after managing to escape his grip. The “I Don’t Wanna Lose You” singer chose not to fight over any of the assets they had accrued together, though she did want the rights to her stage name, which she won.

After divorcing Ike, Tina found herself in financial arrears. Not only were there business debts to settle, she was also in charge of the four kids the couple shared as proceedings dragged on.

To make ends meet, she went back on tour and began her comeback performing covers.

In 1983, she was signed to Capitol Records, with whom she released Private Dancer. The album housed hits such as the titular song, “Private Dancer,” “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” and “Better Be Good to Me.”

The album earned three Grammy Awards and has been dubbed one of the biggest comebacks in music history.

In 2013, Tina tied the knot with her long-term beau, music producer Erwin Bach, after 27 years together. They spent their time quietly together in Zurich, Switzerland.

The pair first met in 1986 at Cologne Bonn Airport where Bach was assigned to pick the singer up. The connection was instantaneous.

“He was [16 years] younger [than me]. He was 30 years old at the time and had the prettiest face. I mean, you cannot [describe] it,” Tina stated in an HBO Max documentary about her life. “It was like insane. [I thought], ‘Where did he come from?’ He was really so good-looking. My heart [was beating fast] and it means that a soul has met, and my hands were shaking.”

After taking some much-deserved time off — eight years away from the public eye, to be exact — Tina announced while on The Oprah Show that she’d be hitting the stage one more time. She was 68.

The 50th Anniversary Tour began in October 2008 and went through May 2009 with a total of 84 sold-out dates across North America and Europe.

This would be her final tour, as she announced her retirement once the tour wrapped.

In 2018, the living legend made one last foray into the public eye when Tina: The Tina Turner Musical premiered on Broadway. Like What’s Love Got to Do With It — a 1993 film following Tina’s life in the spotlight — the play chronicled her illustrious life and career, but focused more on her comeback era and mega hits.

Throughout her five-decade-long career, Tina amassed a slew of awards, including eight Grammys, three AMAs, seven Billboard Music Awards and many more.

She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice — the first time in 1991 with Ike, and the second time in 2021, weeks ahead of her 82nd birthday.

On May 24, 2023, Tina died at age 83 after a long illness at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.

“With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model,” her spokesperson, Bernard Doherty, said in a statement.

The statement of the sentence sounded strong, and more so in a country like the United States where sports stars are considered celebrities and what they do off the court, including their relationships or love slips, is closely scrutinized. And even more so in Los Angeles, home of Hollywood and the paparazzi.

However, the impact of the ‘news’ came to naught as soon as one realized that the pun made perfect sense because of the recent addition of LeBron’s son Bronny to the Lakers, who selected him with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. It’s true that LeBron is sleeping with his new teammate’s mother. Specifically with Savannah James, his wife and mother of Bronny.

This is the first time in NBA history, pun intended, that it is considered acceptable for a player to sleep with his teammate’s mother. In fact, the real issue over which rivers of ink would flow would be if they didn’t sleep together.

Savannah, 37, and LeBron, 39, have been high school sweethearts and were married on Sept. 14, 2013. They have three children together, Bronny, Bryce and Zhuri, and are a very happy family.
