In a lopsided Davis Cup clash, Novak Djokovic demolished world No. 770 Ioannis Xilas with a swift 6-0, 6-1 victory in just 38 minutes, following the withdrawal of Greece’s top player Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The tennis match, held in Belgrade, saw Djokovic take the first set in a mere 20 minutes to the delight of the local fans. The crowd showed their sportsmanship by giving Xilas a standing ovation when he won his sole game.

Djokovic maintained his dominance throughout the match, quickly dispatching his Greek opponent. Earlier, Miomir Kecmanovic secured a win over Aristotelis Thanos with a score of 6-3, 6-3, putting Serbia ahead 2-0 before Djokovic’s triumph.

Serbia now only needs one more win from the remaining three matches to clinch victory. Djokovic, uncertain about future opportunities to play at home due to the Davis Cup’s new format of hosting all group games in a single city, expressed his intention to savor the moment.

“I don’t have any plans, only in the Davis Cup. I really just want to enjoy it because depending on the format and how things unfold in the coming years, maybe this is the last Davis Cup in front of the domestic audience, so I’ll enjoy it,” he explained.

“My subjective feeling is that people follow a lot when competitions are held in Serbia, but they also follow competitions around the world. What is beautiful pleases us, we all want it, for as many people as possible to follow.

“Like any other, it is difficult, especially since it is an individual sport, everything depends on you, that is quite cruel.

“We have success at the world level that inspires the young generation to get active, to be interested in tennis and to play it. Since it is a global sport, you have the opportunity to promote your country.”
