He shared a bed with his brothers, Thanasis, Alex, and Kostas, as they couldn’t afford a bigger home with more rooms.

When his coach Vasilis Xenakis encouraged him to join the basketball team, Giannis was uninterested, having no experience in the sport. The same was true for his siblings.

To motivate him, the coach offered the possibility of earning money: “I told him that if he gave basketball a try, he could potentially make some money to buy food,” Xenakis recalled.

He also promised to help Giannis find a football team if basketball didn’t work out. Eventually, that offer became unnecessary as they both recognized Giannis’s potential on the basketball court.

When the Antetokounmpo brothers started playing basketball, they often had to share a single pair of shoes for games.

At checkout, Giannis would pass his shoes to Thanasis and vice versa.

Giannis later told ESPN: “Those moments were beautiful. Overcoming struggles and seeing my family thriving now is unbelievable. I cherish those memories and appreciate having gone through those times.

“While we may not have had much money, we were happy. When challenges arose, we would gather in the same room, laugh, and have fun despite our difficulties. That definitely made us stronger.”
