Βreaᴋing Νews: Chiᴄago Sky’s Diamond DeShields Facing SUSPENSION For Flagrant Foul on Caitlin Clark a.

“Absolutely filthy”- Fans lambast Diamond DeShields for flagrant foul on Caitlin Clark.

Diamond DeShields starred in a controversial moment with Caitlin Clark during Friday night’s  Chicago Sky vs Indiana Fever game. With 3:52 seconds left on the clock in the fourth quarter and the Fever holding a 96-71 advantage, Clark got a pass off a steal from Aliyah Boston. As she took off for the fast break, DeShields went after her, lowered her shoulder and hit Clark.

She was issued a flagrant 1 foul for that action, but the call was only the beginning, as several fans took to social media to flame DeShields. The harsh comments didn’t take long to arrive, with some fans asking for severe sanctions for DeShields.

“Diamond Deshields is being absolutely filthy towards Caitlin Clark at the moment,” one fan said.

“Diamond Deshields is a s ** t bag for this. She’s a veteran player. She knows exactly what she did to Caitlin Clark,” another fan emphatically said.

“WNBA should make a rule where players targeting others purposefully should be fined and  forced to sit out!” another fan expressed.

Others called for more action from Clark or her teammates.

“Her last 3 fouls on Clark was unnecessary and flagrant. Clark or her teammate better swing on  someone to get this shit to stop,” one fan wrote.

One fan compared that play to a football tackle.

Clark had the last laugh over DeShields, as the Fever dominated the game securing the win and  the regular-season series over the Sky, who lost their fifth consecutive game.

Caitlin Clark went off against Diamond  DeShields, Chicago Sky

Caitlin Clark came off a 19-point performance against the Connecticut Sun to beat that team for the first time this season. The WNBA star rookie picked up from where she left off and raised the bar against the Sky, going for a season-high 31 points on 8-of-14 from the field and 5-of-9 from distance.

She only missed one of her 11 free-throw attempts, grabbed four rebounds, dished 12 assists and turned the ball over just three times.

It was a pretty efficient game for Clark, who couldn’t be stopped by DeShields or whoever Teresa
Weatherspoon put on her. The Fever got the 100-81 win to reach the .500 mark with a 16-16
    record.

This team’s turnaround after a shaky start is nothing short of remarkable. They looked lost at the start of the season, but as the weeks went by and Caitlin Clark found her rhythm, things started falling into place for Indiana.

Clark knocked to floor in third quarter on Friday, lay there for several moments

Why Caitlin Clark is the clear ROTY at this point over Angel Reese | What's Wright?

Caitlin Clark didn’t get the foul calls she was looking for during the Indiana Fevers’ 99-88 loss to the Minnesota Linx on Friday.

After the game, Clark referred to instances in which she was hit by opposing players but refs didn’t blow the whistle. Clark said those moments had an emotional impact on her that she hopes to control better.

“I thought I got fouled a couple times there in the second half on mid-range jump shots,” Clark said. “It happens. Sometimes they get calls, sometimes they don’t. It is what it is. I think I settled a little bit too much for mid-ranee jump shots, but I thought I got bumped a little bit, and I was honestly trying to shot-fake them to get them to foul me.

“I mean, I think I could have done a little bit better of a job controlling my own emotions.”

But Clark added that she doesn’t believe her emotions need to change.

“I think there’s a line and sometimes your passion, your emotion can get to you,” Clark said. “But that’s never something I would ever change or anybody on our team would change.”

At one point in the game during the third quarter, Clark got knocked to the floor by Minnesota’s Napheesa Collier. Collier’s arms appeared to hit Clark in the upper head and shoulder area when Clark tried to score in the paint.

The officials did not call a foul on Collier, and Clark lay on the floor with her arms spread out to her sides.

Clark didn’t have any urgency in getting back up, and the Lynx made it down the court on a fast break and scored. That score put the Fever in a 10-point hole that they never dug out of.

Clark’s coach, Christie Sides, addressed the incident after the game, too.

“When she’s upset or mad — that’s what we’ve been working on, trying to figure out how to get past those moments,” Sides said. “She’s got to learn that, in those moments, I need my point guard to have a cool head, get us in whatever we need to be in offensively, and if it’s not a foul call that you thought, you have to get back.”

“There’s a reaction to all of our actions, and we have to make sure we don’t put ourselves in a worse spot with those kind of moments.”

Clark has had to manage her emotions quickly since coming to the WNBA with regard to hard fouls.

Last week, Chicago Sky player Diamond DeShields sent Clark flying across the floor for a foul that was later upgraded to flagrant-1. After the game, DeShields posted a screenshot of her notifications list on Instagram, which included a string of hate comments from a user.

Clark took an infamous illegal hip check from Chicago Sky forward Chennedy Carter on June 1. Carter refused to answer questions about the incident at the postgame press conference but used her social media to repeatedly criticize Clark.

Sky rookie Angel Reese struck Clark in the head with her arm while trying to block a pass during a game on June 16.

Former NBA All-Star Joakim Noah believes the Fever should look to address the issue by signing a player who can dish the punishment back against opponents who are too physical with Clark.

“If I was the owner of the Indiana Fever, I would get a real enforcer in there to protect her,” Noah told Fox News Digital during an interview at “NBA Night” in the Emirates Suite at the U.S. Open in New York on Wednesday.

Noah acknowledged that Clark may be getting hit by opposing players because they are aware of the talent she brings as a difference-maker on the court.

“Sometimes I feel like she is getting hit because she is a very talented person,” he said. “But at the end of the day, we’re in the business of winning games, so if I’m the owner [of the Indiana Fever], I’m getting a real enforcer in there.”

However, Noah believes that the physical treatment Clark has received has been great for the WNBA.

“I think it’s great,” Noah said when specifically asked about the fouls that have occurred against Chicago. “I think it’s all entertainment.”

ESPN broadcaster Holly Rowe issued a similar sentiment to Noah’s in an interview with Fox News Digital last month.

“I think it’s good for the game,” Rowe said. “I kind of love it because it is supposed to be salty, that’s why it’s competitive, that’s why it’s sports.”

Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley spoke out against the players who have undermined the positive attention Clark’s rookie season has brought to the WNBA this year during an appearance on the “Bill Simmons Podcast” on Wednesday.

“These ladies, and I’m a WNBA fan, they could not have f—ed this Caitlin Clark thing up even worse if they tried,” Barkley said on the show. “This girl is incredible,” Barkley said. “The number of attention, eyeballs, she’s brought to college and the pros, and for these women to have this petty jealousness, and you’re saying to yourself, ‘Damn, what is going on here?’”

The spotlight on Caitlin Clark during her rookie season may be brighter than ever on a WNBA player.

The former Iowa Hawkeyes superstar is finding out the hard way that things are not going to come easy for her in her rookie campaign in the WNBA. On Friday night, she was reminded of that as the Indiana Fever took on the defending champion Las Vegas Aces.

Early in the second quarter, Aces star Alysha Clark became enraged after she was called for a foul following Clark’s attempt to drive to the basket and score.

Clark took a huge hit to her face and got two free throws because of it.

Several pictures from that game show just how brutal that foul was. They show Alysha Clark with her right hand on Caitlin Clark’s neck, ripping her to the floor from behind.

A’ja Wilson, who led the Las Vegas Aces to a 99-80 victory over the Indiana Fever on Saturday night, demonstrated why she is perhaps the finest player in the league right now with 29 points and 15 rebounds. Rookie Caitlin Clark may be the WNBA’s future, but she witnessed in real-time what a superstar looks like.

It’s challenging for Caitlin Clark to lead the typical life she formerly knew because she is constantly harassed by fans and the media.

She recently spoke on that fact.

“Honestly, I feel like I talk to the media more than I get to talk to my own family … which is really kind of sad, in a way,” Clark said during a press conference earlier this week. “It’s a lot for somebody that’s 22 years old. It can be tough at times.”

Being unable to talk with family makes this tough season even worse.

The WNBA didn’t do Clark and the Fever any favors with the early schedule. The team just had their seventh game in 12 days and third in four.

Jannik Sinner net worth soars as world No.1 takes home huge US Open prize money

Tennis gem Jannik Sinner doubled up at the US Open after his second Grand Slam title boosted his bank balance considerably.

A second Grand Slam title of 2024 has increased Jannik Sinner’s stock after he beat Taylor Fritz to clinch the US Open crown on Sunday. The decider proved to be somewhat one-sided in the end as Sinner soared to a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 victory, adding the New York major to his growing collection.

Expectations were high for the world No.1 at Flushing Meadows after he sealed his maiden major at this year’s Australian Open before reaching the French Open’s last four. However, some may have been surprised at just how routine he made things look after dropping just two of 23 sets played en route to the title.

And to the victor goes the spoils as the 23-year-old added another £2.7million ($3.6m) payday to his list of achievements. The newly crowned US Open champion has now earned more money than any other player on the ATP Tour in 2024, overtaking Carlos Alcaraz in the last major tournament of the year.

That pay cheque will also plump up Sinner’s net worth nicely following the biggest win of his career to date. His US Open winnings dwarf his Australian Open prize money by almost £1m and boost his overall wealth to around £14m ($18.5m).

That’s after accounting for the percentage he’ll have to pay in New York taxes before taking his own cut of the US Open grand prize. Sinner will also have coaches and other expenses to pay, so an approximate final take of £2m or so seems conservative enough.

Tennis players are required to pay tax on earnings in the country (and/or state) in which they won the money. That’s why winnings don’t contribute as significantly to an athlete’s net worth as one might expect.

2024 US Open - Final Day

Sinner has won £8m in prize money this year alone (Image: Getty)

The icon-in-the-making will have one more major opportunity to win big this year when the ATP Finals take place in Turin in November. And the £1.7m ($2.2m) grand prize on offer in his home country would be one heck of a way to sign off the best year of his career to date.

Having come into 2024 without a Grand Slam final appearance to his credit, Sinner now boasts two major crowns and is £8m ($10.5m) better off in ATP winnings alone. That’s without accounting for his many endorsement deals with the likes of Nike, Gucci, Rolex and Head.

For now, however, Sinner will enjoy a well-deserved period of rest after lifting the top honour at Flushing Meadows. The ATP Finals get underway in Turin on November 10, giving the Italian roughly two months to prepare for the end-of-season event.

No other men’s player will carry quite as much momentum as Sinner into the competition, which bodes well for his chances of lifting his first ATP Finals crown. And he’ll have revenge in mind after losing to Novak Djokovic in the deciding match of last year’s competition.

Jannik Sinner sends warning to Novak Djokovic after winning US Open

Jannik Sinner says he can only improve in a warning to Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz after winning the US Open.

Jannik Sinner welcomed the “new generation” taking over men’s tennis after the world No.1 and Carlos Alcaraz shared all the Majors this season – and warned Novak Djokovic and co. he will only improve.

The Australian Open champion, 23, completed the hardcourt double by beating Taylor Fritz to win the US Open title.

Jannik Sinner now has two Grand Slam titles to his name (Image: GETTY)

And after Carlos Alcaraz, 21, won the French Open and Wimbledon, it is the first time since 1993 that all four Majors in the same year have been won by players 23 or younger.

It is also the first tennis season since 2002 that none of the Big Three – Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer – have won a Grand Slam.

“It is a bit different, for sure,” said Sinner. “It’s something new. It’s nice for the sport to see some new champions. Nice to see new rivalries. I feel like the new generation we push each other, trying to improve.

“I always have players and I will always have players who are going to make me a better player, because there are going to be times where they beat me.

“Then you have to try to find a way how to win against certain players. I feel it’s good for the sport to have some new champions.”

Starting in Melbourne in January, Sinner has now won all six finals this season. He is the youngest man to win both hard court Grand Slam titles in the same season.

And he is only third man in Open Era – after Jimmy Connors in 1974 and Guillermo Vilas in 1977 – to win his first two Grand Slam titles in the same year.

And the Italian warned he is only going to get better. “Today we saw that not everything was perfect,” he said “I could have served slightly better, but this makes me realise that the work never stops.

    TENNIS-USA-OPEN

“It’s always a continuous work which, at the end of the day, if you want to be a better player you always have to work, and you have to have these daily routines, accept difficult times on court.

“The work never stops. How can you play better against certain opponents,? How do you work on such shots?

“I was a lot in the gym, because I knew physically I still had to improve and I still have to improve a lot. This is all part of the sacrifices you make for an eventual future. So we will keep working.

“I know that I’m not perfect and I will never be perfect, but we always try to evolve in my game. Then after my career I can say: ‘Okay, I’ve done everything possible to be at 100 per cent.’”

In his courtside interview after beating Fritz in straight sets, Sinner admitted: “The last month has been very difficult because you all know what I went through.”

The world No.1 was cleared to play in New York after a tribunal accepted his two positive tests back in March were caused by a massage by his ex-physio.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner Shakes Off Positive Drug Test Controversy To Win 1st U.S. Open

Many players – past and present – cast doubt on the process while Nick Kyrgios branded the judgement “ridiculous”.

Asked how the tennis world will react to his second Grand Slam title, the Italian said: “I don’t know. You have to ask all the other players. This, I don’t know. Well, that what I can say is that the general reaction of the players was quite positive, even when things came out.

“Then there have been, of course, some different voices, but this is in everything. This is not only in tennis. This is in other sports and different jobs also. You can’t really do anything about that.

“That’s why you have the people close to you, these are the people who knows what was going on and what I and my team went through because it was not only me; it was the whole situation. I just can talk from my side and from my team’s perspective, and we are all very proud of this achievement.”

“If Novak Djokovic won US Open after testing positive for Clostebol, he wouldn’t be celebrated like Jannik Sinner” – Serb’s fans slam Italian’s win

Jannik Sinner won his second Grand Slam title of 2024 with a win over Taylor Fritz in the US Open final on September 8. His victory came amid a doping controversy, which prompted some Novak Djokovic fans to criticize what they saw as double standards, suggesting that the Serb would not have received the same level of praise if he had been in a similar situation.

“If Novak Djokovic won US Open after testing positive for Clostebol, he wouldn’t be celebrated like Jannik Sinner” – Serb’s fans slam Italian’s win

Sinner defeated Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in New York, ending American hopes for a male Grand Slam champion for the first time in 21 years. He also made history as the first Italian man to win the New York Major.

However, Sinner’s campaign was marred by controversy just before the tournament began when it became public knowledge that he had tested positive for the banned substance Clostebol twice during the Indian Wells Masters in March. The ITIA investigation concluded that the substance had been unintentionally introduced into Sinner’s system by his former physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, which led the World No. 1 avoiding suspension.

  • “I consider us the underdogs” – MJ on the Bulls chances against the Jazz in the 1998 Finals

“I consider us the underdogs” – MJ on the Bulls chances against the Jazz in the 1998 Finals

The Chicago Bulls were in a great position to end their dynasty on a high note. It was a dramatic season for the Windy City squad, and the Utah Jazz stood in the way.

The Jazz were expected to be smarter in a rematch of the 1997 NBA Finals. Utah had beaten Chicago twice in the regular season (101-94 and 101-93). The Jazz were also well-rested, swiftly ending their series with the Los Angeles Lakers via a sweep.

    michael-jordan© Provided by BasketballNetwork.net

Putting all those together, odds did appear to favor the Jazz heading into the finals rematch. With that in mind, Bulls coach Phil Jackson oddly touched on the topic of losing. For a team that had Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman, pundits felt that the Zen Master was playing some kind of mind games to throw Utah off guard.

    MJ’s unusual jab

Having gone through the eye of the needle to dispose of the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Bulls were expected to have a tough time against the Jazz. Jordan and company branded themselves as underdogs, especially after getting only two days of rest after the EC Finals. The Jazz, on the other hand, had nine days off.

“Human nature says you can’t win every time you make it to the finals, and we’ve done that,” Jordan said. “But I like our chances.”

It would have been foolish to count out the Bulls. This was a team that had already won five NBA titles, and going for a sixth was within reach. Add to the fact that Jordan, Pippen, and Jackson wanted to exit with a bang, aware that this team would be broken up after the 1997-98 season. In all, Chi-Town would not be going down without a fight.

“I consider us the underdogs, but yet I still consider us to be champions,” Jordan said via the New York Times. “They still have to take it away from us, no matter what people are predicting.”

    Bulls kept charging

Michael Jordan was irritated for having to wear No.12 - Basketball Network - Your daily dose of basketball

Although the Bulls and the Jazz finished with similar 62-20 win-loss regular season records, Utah won the right to hold home-court advantage because it blanked Chicago twice in their regular season meetings.

With a 2-3-2 format, Chicago needed to win at least one game at the Delta Center. The Bulls did just that, winning Game 2, 93-88.

However, that went for naught after the Bulls dropped Game 5 at home, 86-82. MJ and his squad needed to win another one if they wanted to get to the promised land. That did happen in Game 6, with the Red & Black winning by the skin of their teeth, 87-86.

MJ admitted that the 1998 title conquest was the toughest compared to the other titles that he won. Considering the circumstances the Bulls faced, “His Airness” had to push himself to win it all.

“I was more competitive than I ever was because I wanted to win more than I ever did,” Jordan, who finished his Bulls career with a game-high 45 points, stated.

It was a dramatic ending for Jordan and the Bulls, pushing them to the limit. After all the celebrating, Chicago would dismantle that team and go on a rebuild. Although they tried, Wind City team has yet to find the right mix to win another NBA title for the franchise.

  • “I wouldn’t doubt that at all” – Antawn Jamison said 50-year-old Michael Jordan would be able to compete in NBA

“I wouldn’t doubt that at all” – Antawn Jamison said 50-year-old Michael Jordan would be able to compete in NBA

In 2013, Antawn Jamison was presented with a hypothetical scenario: If the long-retired Michael Jordan, approaching his 50th birthday, would make another comeback, what could ‘His Airness’ achieve in the current league?

Antawn Jamison said 50 y/o MJ would be able to compete in NBA - Basketball Network - Your daily dose of basketball

Jamison, then with the Los Angeles Lakers, responded with notable confidence just before facing MJ’s then-owned NBA franchise, the Charlotte Bobcats.

“I wouldn’t doubt that in the right situation with a LeBron (James) on his team or with a Kobe (Bryant) on this team, he could get you about 10 or 11 points, come in and play 15-20 minutes. I wouldn’t doubt that at all,” Antawn said, per ESPN.

MJ would need to be fit

Many might question whether Jamison, with all due respect, was out of his mind for suggesting that a 50-year-old could compete with current players from that time, some 20 years younger, who played competitively almost every day.

However, this seemingly outrageous idea makes more sense when you consider that the two-time All-Star was referring to none other than the legendary ‘His Airness.’ Yes, the basketball icon had gained visible weight since his 2003 retirement and surely lacked the stamina he had during his playing days, but Jamison acknowledged this himself.

The Louisiana native concluded his remarks by saying it would be crucial for MJ to be “in shape” to hold his own.

Michael Jordan «heureux» que la justice chinoise étudie sa plainte | La Presse

    Overcoming obstacles

Two other factors likely shaped Antawn’s response.

First, Jordan had already made two notable comebacks during his storied career. The first came after his hiatus from basketball to play baseball when he returned to the Chicago Bulls in 1995 and added three more rings to the three he had already won. The second MJ comeback happened in 2001 with the Wizards. Even at his advanced age, in his 14th and 15th NBA seasons, Mike stood out as the best player on the team.

Second, ‘His Airness’ was famous for one remarkable trait: He was an incredibly competitive workaholic, a rarity both then and now. This characteristic didn’t fade with age; during Michael’s Hall of Fame induction in 2009, he shared thoughts similar to Antawn’s.

“One day, you might look up and see me playing the game at 50,” Jordan remarked, and in response to the ensuing laughter, he added, “Oh, don’t laugh. Never say never. Because limits, like fears, are often just an illusion.”

Michael Jordan Spotted At North Carolina Game To Honor Coach Roy Williams - Fadeaway World

Jamison, who shares a North Carolina connection with the NBA legend, made one last case for his claim.

“You hear stories still to this day, especially last year, him going to the practice facility and playing 1-on-1 with the guys, and still they can’t stop him,” he emphasized.

While it’s certainly hard to determine if a 50-year-old MJ could have truly competed in a hypothetical comeback, especially given how the game had evolved over the years, one thing is still certain: True greatness always endures.

Angel Reese announces she’s out for season with injury, currently has most rebounds in WNBA history

Angel Reese’s record-setting rookie season is over two weeks before anyone expected.

Angel Reese will miss rest of WNBA season because of wrist injury | CNN

The Chicago Sky forward announced she will miss the rest of the season due to an injury on Saturday. Her team later announced the issue is a wrist injury from Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Sparks.

    Reese’s full announcement:

“What a year. I never would have imagined the last bucket of my rookie season would be a 3 but maybe that was God saying give them a taste of what they will be seeing more of in Year 2 lol🥲Through it all, I have showed that I belong in this league even when no one else believed. All I have ever wanted was to come into the W and make an impact. I can confidently say I have done that and will strive to keep doing so. I’m filled with emotions right now that I have a season ending injury, but also filled with so much gratitude for what is next. Although this is God’s timing and not mine, I am finally able to give myself a physical and mental break. “God gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers.”

“You’ll still see me being the biggest cheerleader on the sideline! And Unrivaled league, see you soon! 💞😇”

Despite missing the final six games of the Sky’s regular-season schedule, Reese will still finish her rookie season with the most single-season rebounds by a WNBA player — not rookie, player — in history, unless Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson catches her. Reese currently has 446 on the season, while Wilson sits at 406 with six games to go.

Reese has also set the WNBA record for consecutive double-doubles (10) and the rookie record for total double-doubles (26). Had she played a few more games, she could have also broken Alyssa Thomas’ record of 28.

In any other season, that productivity would have made Reese the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year, but it seems all it will do this year is cement her as a rival for Caitlin Clark, who is making her own history. The race between Clark and Reese might be the most competitive in the league’s history, but many thought the award was the Indiana Fever star’s to lose, and the extra games will only help her.

Regardless, Reese’s season has been an enormous success in its own right. Many questioned if the former LSU star would be able to adjust to the WNBA, with concerns about her offensive game and size at 6-foot-3 resulting in her falling to No. 7 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft.

It took very few games for Reese to erase, or at least mitigate, those concerns through elite rebounding and defensive tenacity. It’s not hyperbole to say she is now the face of the Sky, who are currently 12-22.

The Chicago Sky will be missing the services of rookie star forward Angel Reese for the rest of the 2024 WNBA season after she suffered a wrist injury during last Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Sparks.

In a post on TikTok, Reese said that doctors gave her the option to forego surgery to repair his upper-body injury. Reese ended up choosing to go under the knife following a seemingly stern warning from doctors about potential arthritis and other long-term issues if she decided against addressing the injury by surgery.

“Basically the doctors told me that I could either not get surgery or have surgery,” Reese opened up about her injury.

“The risk of not having surgery, I could literally have arthritis at 22 years old. That wasn’t an option. The bone could literally crack and literally completely shatter. Right now it’s like a hairline. Literally a hairline like shatter.”

Reese, who also said that she will be having surgery on Tuesday, concludes her rookie WNBA season with impressive averages nonetheless. In her first season as a pro, the former LSU Tiger star averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per contest.

A constant double-double machine, Reese’s absence is a painful blow for the Sky, though, Chicago was able to win their first game without her on Sunday against the Dallas Wings, 92-77.

Chicago still has five more games left in the regular season to try and boost its chances to clinch a playoff spot. At the moment, the Sky are eighth in the standing with a 13-22 record.
