‘I played against Federer, Nadal and Djokovic – one commands more respect than the rest’

The recently retired Diego Schwartzman issued his verdict on the eternal tennis debate.

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer? It’s the age-old tennis debate.

No tennis fan has the same answer, with each of the ‘Big Three’ boasting their own set of loyal supporters.

It’s the same for the players, too. For those lucky enough to have shared a court with all three, the question of who’s the greatest is still one that often splits opinion.

For Diego Schwartzman though, the answer is simple… it’s Nadal.

The former French Open semi-finalist opened up about his experiences playing against the trio, telling ESPN: “I think Rafa, of the three, is the one who commands the most respect when you enter the court. It’s like you enter the court a little more defeated. “

Schwartzman has beaten Nadal in the past, triumphing 6-2 7-5 in the quarter-final of the 2020 Rome Masters.

Commenting after his surprise win over the King of Clay five years ago, Schwartzman dubbed it his best performance ever. He said: “It was crazy. Tennis is crazy. Our performance is always crazy. The past three weeks were really bad for me,” Schwartzman said on court after his victory.

“Today I played my best tennis. Very similar to Roland Garros against Rafa three years ago and I’m very happy. I was not thinking to beat him really because I was not playing good [lately]. But today I did my best and I’m very happy.”

However, prior to that victory, the Argentine had played Nadal on eight different occasions, losing to him every single time.

Schwartzman, like Nadal, recently made the decision to hang up his racket, retiring at his home tournament in Argentina.

In a statement, the 32-year-old wrote: “I want my last tournaments to be my own decision.

“Let this 2024 be that way, hopefully getting the opportunity to compete in the tournaments I enjoy the most. And in 2025, in Argentina, to be able to have my final moment, the most beautiful closure I can imagine.”

He continued: “But at the end of 2022, I had a bad run in indoor tournaments, and afterwards I noticed that I wasn’t nervous the days before the tournaments. I was as if nothing had happened. 20 minutes before the matches my adrenaline would rise and it made me feel bad.

“Something that had been going well for me years ago became anxiety that made me lose control and I didn’t like it anymore. I played badly, I didn’t feel like training and I wasn’t well, until I realised that I didn’t want to anymore.”

No doubt to the delight of Schwartzman, Nadal was among those from the world of tennis to congratulate him on his career, posting on X: “Congratulations @dieschwartzman on your great career!”

“You’ve been a great example of fighting and overcoming. I’m glad we’ve shared so many moments on the Tour. Enjoy your next steps!”

It’s been two weeks since Jannik Sinner accepted a three-month suspension as part of a case resolution agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency.

The world No. 1’s ban runs from February 9 to May 4, meaning he is set to miss four Masters 1000s – Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo and Madrid.

But Sinner has been keeping busy. The Italian has already turned to two other sports and even appeared at Milan Fashion Week. His team also has a plan to keep him fit during his ban.

Sinner’s doping saga finally came to an end after almost a year. Last March, he twice tested positive for the prohibited substance clostebol but successfully appealed both his provisional suspensions and was allowed to continue playing.

The world No. 1 successfully argued that the positive tests were the result of contamination by his then-physiotherapist. In August, an independent tribunal ruled that he “bore no fault or negligence” for the anti-doping violations.

However, WADA appealed on the basis that Sinner bears some responsibility for negligence within his entourage.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport was set to hear the case in April, but on February 15, WADA announced Sinner had accepted a three-month suspension to settle the case.

Since then, Sinner has been unable to compete in or attend any official tournament. He also cannot train at clubs or facilities affiliated with a tennis federation.

But that hasn’t stopped the 23-year-old from enjoying himself during his suspension. While he can’t play on the tennis tour, Sinner has returned to one of his old sports – skiing.

The three-time Major winner was a champion skier as a child but gave up the sport to play tennis. Nowadays, he rarely gets out on his skis because of the injury risk.

But, while out of competition for three months, he returned to the slopes in Sexten last weekend.

Sinner has also been enjoying some golf as he was spotted at the Golf & Country club in Sudtirol. The world No. 1’s golf swing recently became a talking point at the Australian Open, as Carlos Alcaraz had to rate his rivals and put Sinner at the bottom of the pile.

“I’m sorry it’s going to be probably selfish but I’m going to put myself the first one. Second one Rafa and third probably Jannik. Sorry about it. It’s not personal,” the world No. 3 said during an on-court interview.

Novak Djokovic wasted little time before mocking Stefanos Tsitsipas after the Greek star defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-3 in the Dubai Championships final. World No. 11 Tsitsipas finally broke his ATP 500 duck in the United Arab Emirates, having lost all 11 of his previous finals, including the 2019 and 2020 Dubai editions.

He won the last four games of the first set and took his opening match point with conviction, serving up an ace, before saving all seven break points in the second to seal victory and move back into the ATP top 10 for the first time since May. However, Djokovic took to Instagram with a cheeky barb, sharing a picture of Tsitsipas with the trophy and captioning it: “No one beats @stefanostsitsipas98 12x in a row on 500 Tour level. Well done!” The post was accompanied by a laughing emoji.

By victory in Dubai, Tsitsipas became just the 10th male player to compete the ‘Career Sweep’ which consists of an ATP 250 title, ATP 500, Masters 1000 and ATP Finals.

“Great week in Dubai,” the 26-year-old said in his on-court interview. “I’m happy I had great people by my side. As Felix said, there are people outside of the box that I’d like to mention that have been there for me in my toughest moments. Shout out to them.

“Felix, what a great player you’re becoming over the last couple years. I congratulate you on your journey so far. I’ve been observing the last couple of months. You’ve upped your level. Great job on that.

“Obviously hoping, or not, playing more finals against each other in the future. It wasn’t meant to be, but it will be next time. Congratulations to yourself and your team that’s been pushing you every single week.”

He later posted a direct response to his critics on social media after a dip in form over the past 12 months, writing: “They said my game was sinking… so I got myself a boat.”

During their playing days, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova had one of the fiercest rivalries in tennis. Sharapova burst onto the scene when she was just 17 years old, upsetting Williams to win her first Major title at Wimbledon.

While their competition was always hyped up, their rivalry became very one sided – Williams won 20 of their 22 matches. Sharapova later claimed that the American “hated” her for being the “skinny kid who beat her”. But Williams had none of it, calling Sharapova out.

Sharapova was just 17 years old when she won her first of five Major titles at Wimbledon in 2004, upsetting Williams in the final. Serena and her sister Venus had been the only players to lift the trophy at the All England Club in the 21st century until Sharapova’s triumph.

The teenager breezed past Williams, winning 6-1 6-4. Sharapova also beat Williams at the WTA Finals later that year. But she never won another match against the 23-time Major winner.

By the time they retired, Williams led their head-to-head record 20-2, but Sharapova always thought the American held a grudge against her and claimed she caught her rival crying in the locker room way back in 2004.

In her 2017 autobiography, she wrote: “I think Serena hated me for being the skinny kid who beat her, against all the odds, at Wimbledon.

Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova Paris Fashion Week.

“I think she hated me for taking something that she believes belongs to her. I think she hated me for seeing her at her lowest moment. But mostly I think she hated me for hearing her cry. She’s never forgiven me for it.”

When asked about Sharapova’s claims, Williams quickly called out the Russian for writing “hearsay” and being “negative”.

The 23-time Major winner was out of competition when Sharapova released her book in 2017, as she took a pregnancy break. When she returned to action the following year, Williams was question over Sharapova’s claims.

“I think the book was 100 per cent hearsay,” she stated. “At least all the stuff I read and the quotes I read, which was a little bit disappointing.”

Williams confirmed she had cried in the locker room “many times after a loss” but said it was normal for players to do and showed their passion. She continued: “It’s a Wimbledon final so I think it would be more shocking if I wasn’t in tears.”

Serena Williams : « Je suis devenue obsédée par le régime »

While the 43-year-old didn’t deny that she cried after the loss, she wasn’t happy with the “not-so-positive way” Sharapova presented their rivalry in her autobiography.

The five-time Grand Slam champion defended her account of their competition, saying it would be “strange” not to include Williams in her story, but the American still wasn’t happy.

“So I don’t have any negative feelings towards her, which again, was a little disappointing to see in that hearsay book,” Williams added.

“So I have always, you know, and especially having a daughter, like, I feel like negativity is taught. One of the things I always say, I feel like women, especially, should bring each other up.”

However, Williams and Sharapova appeared to have buried the hatchet. They now enjoy catching up at high-profile events like the Met Gala and, last year, Williams said it was never personal between them.

While the world is captivated by Novak’s record-breaking exploits on the court, few know about the remarkable woman who played a pivotal role in shaping his career. Dijana’s life, filled with resilience and fascinating experiences, reveals fascinating and lesser-known facts that offer deeper insight into the foundations of Novak’s greatness.

Born in Serbia, Dijana has always been a role model of strength and determination. She is of Croatian descent, a heritage she proudly embraced as she raised her children in Serbia. This cultural mix not only enriched Novak’s upbringing, but also taught him the value of inclusion and respect for diverse backgrounds. Dijana’s influence extended beyond cultural teachings; she played an active role in fostering discipline and perseverance in Novak from a young age.

Interestingly, Dijana was not initially a tennis enthusiast. Before Novak became a global celebrity, tennis was relatively unknown in Serbia and the sport was not a big part of the family’s life. Dijana and her husband, Srdjan, owned a pizzeria and creperie in Kopaonik, a mountainous region of Serbia. It was there, amidst the hustle and bustle of running a family business, that Dijana’s eye for potential recognized her son’s extraordinary talent. Despite financial constraints and a lack of infrastructure, she and her husband made countless sacrifices to support Novak’s budding tennis career, even when the odds seemed insurmountable.

Dijana’s journey as the mother of a tennis prodigy is anything but conventional. She often tells stories of traveling with Novak to tournaments across Europe, often sleeping in their car to save money. Her emphasis on mindfulness and emotional balance has undoubtedly contributed to Novak’s ability to remain calm under pressure, a quality that has propelled him to victory in some of the most grueling matches in tennis history.

All About Novak Djokovic's Parents, Dijana and Srdjan Djokovic

While many know Dijana as Novak’s mother, few know her artistic side. She has a keen eye for interior design and prides herself on creating warm, aesthetically pleasing spaces, both at home and in her family’s businesses. This creative flair not only reflects her personality, but also serves as a source of inspiration for Novak, who has often spoken about the importance of finding joy and beauty in everyday life.

Former world No 21 Steve Johnson has expressed uncertainty over Novak Djokovic’s “plan” as he questioned the Serbian’s decision to play at the Qatar Open.

Novak Djokovic concerns raised in 'flat emotionally' assessment by ex-ATP pro

Djokovic lost 7-6(4), 6-2 to Matteo Berrettini in the first round of the ATP 500 tournament in Doha last week.

The tennis legend made a swift return to action in Qatar after the hamstring tear that ended his Australian Open campaign.

The 37-year-old suffered the injury during his four-set quarter-final triumph over Carlos Alcaraz in Melbourne, but he was unable to continue after losing the opening set of his semi-final with Alexander Zverev.

Djokovic said he felt fine physically after his early exit in Doha, although a video surfaced showing him appearing to limp as he entered an airport to depart from Doha.

The former world No 1 has his sights set on winning a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title in 2025, while he is also chasing his 100th singles title in total.

On the Nothing Major podcast, Johnson spoke candidly about Djokovic playing in Qatar and argued the world No 7 has been looked flat emotionally more often recently.

“I am not sure what Novak’s plan is going forward, nobody knows it but him,” the American said. “I don’t know why he is playing this tournament just in general.

Novak Djokovic’s ranking, prize money, sponsors and his next tournament

“It feels like he just wants to win Slams to continue his legacy and stamp as the greatest champion of the sport we have ever seen.

“There is obviously financial obligations and commitments he has made in the past, we don’t know exactly what it takes for him to play these types of events.

“It just feels as if he is not as motivated to win in Dubai or Doha than he is to win a Slam, which is rightfully so, because that’s the only thing which can further his legacy.

“Good to see him out there playing, I thought we weren’t going to see him until Indian Wells and just play some of the Masters series to win the French [Open], win Wimby [Wimbledon]. So interesting to see him out there.

Novak Djokovic reveals his legacy dream as he hopes to leave a mark in tennis

“It sometimes feels that he is a bit flat emotionally, which has usually never been the case for him.

“So he has earned the right to play whatever schedule he deserves and wants to do.

“It’s a tough draw going against Berrettini who played really well that match, the serve, the forehand. Everything was going well.

“So it’s just interesting to watch Novak in these events because the Doha title is not going to further his legacy, so I’m not sure his emotional investment.”

Novak Djokovic Next Tournament: All you need to know about Serb’s schedule after Qatar Open shocker

Novak Djokovic last competed at the Qatar Open and will next compete at the Indian Wells Masters. That was confirmed on social media by the Indian Wells Masters page which floated him as a player coming to the event.

    2025 Australian Open - Day 10 - Source: Getty

In fairness, it also floated Venus Williams as a player that would play at this year’s Indian Wells Masters only for her to come out and deny that a couple of days later. Unless it messes up in a big way again, we’ll roll with Djokovic showing up to play at the event. However, it wasn’t a foregone conclusion when he crashed out of the Qatar Open a few days ago.

Djokovic returned at the event as it was the first time he played since the Australian Open, which was derailed by a leg injury. Doha looked fine as he played well, but he then ran into an inspired Matteo Berrettini who proved a bit too tough to overcome.

There was no indication that Novak Djokovic had any lingering effects of the injury but footage of him limping slightly at the Qatar Open showed up and many fans got concerned. That video cemented that Djokovic wouldn’t be playing at the Dubai event so the attention turned to Indian Wells.

The event wasn’t too far away and an injury could still impact that event; however, it seems like it won’t. We’re a couple of days away from that and Djokovic has been confirmed to play though it remains to be seen if he truly shows up. The injury could still be affecting him but he’s keeping shush. Last year’s Indian Wells Masters wasn’t a great time for him as he lost early against Luca Nardi.

There remains a question of how motivated he will be but those follow Djokovic at all the events he plays that are not Grand Slams. He did seem quite inspired in that Doha match showing quite a bit of emotion and wanting to win but he didn’t have the level for it.

Many questions are lingering for Novak Djokovic, especially the health ones as he’s been dealing with a few injury problems lately.

Novak Djokovic’s injury record is not as impeccable anymore

For much of his career, Novak Djokovic has had an impeccable injury record rarely missing time. He did have an elbow problem that gave him massive issues a couple of years ago but since then he’s been mostly injury-free. That’s changed in the past year and a bit more dating back to the French Open where an injury prevented him from finishing the event.

Djokovic also dealt with a couple of injuries later in the year as his US Open was hampered by one. He started this year with more injury concern as a leg injury derailed his Australian Open and now the Qatar Open was as well. While that’s not an overwhelming amount of injury it’s pretty clear that his body is slowly becoming a problem because he’s dealing with more and more of those which isn’t something that he’s used to.

Djokovic’s also not playing as much which might be him simply playing the events he’ll care about but it might also be a conscious effort trying to limit his fatigue overall.

Novak Djokovic confirms the next two tournaments he's planning to play after his first round exit in Qatar

As great and as crisp as his tennis has remained Novak Djokovic does rely heavily on his physique. His game is centered around him being able to be on the shot on time so he can deliver a quality one and if the step is a bit too slow he won’t be able to play as well as he has. We’ve seen that in matches against Jannik Sinner where he doesn’t have an answer not because he can’t play a quality shot but because he doesn’t have the time under the relentless pressure of the Italian.

The body is where it is and won’t get younger so he’s slowly but surely drifting downwards. As great as he’s been in the past twenty years Djokovic at one point will hit his limit and he’s slowly but surely been drifting toward that. It would be foolish to pronounce him as done before he is done but the trends with him lately haven’t been good.

Maybe the Sunshine double will show us something else. Perhaps the clay season will show something else. Maybe Djokovic will win Wimbledon again but what is clear is that chances to win are getting less and less and with time they will become zero. That’s when he’ll leave the sport though not as a sad man because his career is the best tennis career humanity has ever witnessed. Perhaps forever.

After parting with coach Nick Cavaday post-Australian Open, Emma Raducanu’s team has added another member ahead of a trip to Indian Wells.

Emma Raducanu will be joined by new interim coach Tom Welsh as she heads to the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. Welsh previously worked with Raducanu’s US Open final opponent, Leylah Fernandez.

The 22-year-old will head stateside on the back of her concerning interaction with a fan who displayed “fixated behaviour” in Dubai and was subsequently removed from the venue, with Raducanu reduced to tears. An additional security detail has been offered to the Brit, who saw her last coach, Nick Cavaday, step down after the Australian Open due to health concerns.

While she has been working with Jane O’Donoghue, Roman Kelecic, and strength and conditioning specialist Yutaka Nakamura, Welsh will now enter the fray, having previously aided Fernandez – who wishes to chew the fat with Raducanu over their unforgettable Flushing Meadows showpiece.

Raducanu is still seeking a new permanent coach while Welsh helps out in the meantime. The Englishman has worked as an Academy Coach at Loughborough University, which he joined in 2022, having helped US Open finalist Fernandez in the past.

The Canadian admitted in 2022 when speaking on her relationship with conqueror Raducanu: “When we see each other crossing the halls, practice courts, we always smile at each other because we know what we did was incredible. We just want the best for each other.”

However, she has now expressed a desire to sit down with the Brit to reflect on their momentous 2021 final, though admits it may have to come at the end of this WTA season.

“It would be interesting,” said Fernandez when asked if she’d like to talk to Raducanu. “But now, because it’s in-season and we want to do well in our own careers, we try to put it behind us. We don’t want to focus on it too much.

    2021 US Open - Day 19

Fernandez wants to sit down with Raducanu (Image: Getty)

“Maybe at the end of the season, when we cross paths, maybe we could have a conversation about it. For now, you can’t be thinking about the past. You have to be thinking about what you’re doing right now.”

Despite the addition of Welsh, former British No.1 Laura Robson feels Raducanu won’t take the plunge with a new permanent coach in the immediate future, instead biding her time while options are limited.

“I don’t think she’s in any rush, really, to employ someone new, just for the sake of it,” Robson told Sky Sports. “It has to make sense for her, and it has to be the right person.

“There’s not too many amazing coaches around who can travel full-time. So [her] options are pretty limited. You wouldn’t want to enter a new partnership without 100 per cent confidence.”
