Gene Hackman died of heart disease, about one week after wife died of hantavirus: investigators

Bodies of Gene Hackman, wife Betsy Arakawa Hackman discovered at their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on Feb. 26

SANTA FE, N.M. — Gene Hackman died due to hypertensive atherosclerosis cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer’s disease as a significant contributing factor, New Mexico officials confirmed Friday. He was likely alone in the home for about a week, until he died around Feb. 18, which was the last time activity was recorded on his pacemaker.

His wife, Betsy (Arakawa) Hackman, died due to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, which is transmitted from animals to humans and is commonly found in rodents, the New Mexico Department of Health confirmed. Her autopsy determined the manner of death as natural. Authorities believe she died on or about Feb. 11.

Chief Medical Investigator Dr. Heather Jarrell performed a full autopsy on Hackman the day after his body was discovered, which showed “severe heart disease, including multiple surgical procedures involving the heart, evidence of prior heart attacks, and severe changes of the kidneys due to chronic high blood pressure.”

She added, “Examination of the brain showed advanced Alzheimer’s disease as well as blood vessel changes in the brain secondary to chronic high blood pressure.”

Jarrell noted that Hackman’s pacemaker data indicated “abnormal rhythm of atrial fibrillation” on Feb. 18. She said it was “reasonable to conclude” Arakawa died the week before Hackman, with the actor’s death likely on Feb. 18.

“Based on the circumstances, it is reasonable to conclude that [Arakawa] passed away first, with February 11th being the last time that she was known to be alive,” Jarrell said.

Investigators determined that Arakawa’s last known activities within the community included a veterinary visit on Feb. 9. Two days later, she was seen at a local grocery store, a pharmacy and a pet store before she returned home to their gated community at around 5:15 p.m. on Feb. 11, Sheriff Adan Mendoza said during the news conference.

When asked if authorities believed Hackman was able to live on his own and survive after his wife died, Jarrell noted that the Oscar-winning actor was in “a very poor state of health.”

“Based on the circumstances, it is reasonable to conclude that Miss Hackman passed away first, with February 11th being the last time that she was known to be alive.”

“Mr. Hackman showed evidence of advanced Alzheimer’s disease,” Jarrell said. “I’m not aware of what his normal daily functioning capability was. He was in a very poor state of health, and he had significant heart disease. And I think ultimately that is what resulted in his, in his death.”

Jarrell was unable to detect evidence of dehydration, and did find “poor kidney function” during the autopsy, but there was “no food in his stomach, which means he had not eaten recently.”

“He was in an advanced state of Alzheimer’s, and it’s quite possible that he was not aware that she was deceased,” the medical examiner said.

Jarrell explained that hantavirus is characterized by “flu-like symptoms consisting of fever, muscle aches, cough, sometimes vomiting and diarrhea that can progress to shortness of breath and cardiac or heart failure and lung failure.”

“This occurs after a one- to eight-week exposure to excrement from a, primarily, particular mouse species, that carries hantavirus,” she said. Hantavirus strains in the U.S. are not transmissible from person to person, but rather from animals to humans.

Dr. Erin Phipps, New Mexico State Veterinarian with the New Mexico Department of Health, explained that the state has confirmed between one and seven cases of the rare infection in humans each year, ending in 2024.

“We have identified 136 infections over the past 50 years in New Mexico residents, five of these in Santa Fe County,” Phipps said. “This is a serious disease. Forty-two percent of these infections here in New Mexico were fatal.”

Hackman and Arakawa, who were married for more than 30 years, and one of their dogs were found dead in their Santa Fe home on Feb. 26 by maintenance workers.

Mendoza indicated during the news conference that Zinna, the dog that had died, may have recently undergone a procedure which could “explain why the dog was in a crate” when she died.

Detectives initially described the couple’s deaths as “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation,” according to a search warrant affidavit obtained by Fox News Digital.

Officials confirmed that no external trauma was seen on either Hackman or Arakawa, and New Mexico authorities promptly launched a criminal investigation into their deaths.

Hackman and Arakawa previously tested negative for carbon monoxide, Mendoza confirmed last week. Their residence was tested for the colorless, odorless gas and was cleared by the Santa Fe City Fire Department after authorities were unable to find evidence of a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning.

Additionally, the New Mexico Gas Company confirmed on Tuesday “no significant findings” after conducting an extensive investigation for gas leaks and carbon monoxide at the couple’s secluded home.

A “minuscule leak (0.33% gas in air – not a lethal amount) at one of the stove burners” was discovered, according to a release obtained by Fox News Digital. Four code enforcement violations were also noted involving “a water heater and gas log lighters installed in three fireplaces.”

Several video are doing rounds on social media that captures debris falling through the sky near south Florida and the Bahamas. SpaceX confirmed in its official statement, that the final contact with Starship was made “approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds after liftoff.”

Explaining what went wrong, Space X wrote on its website, “Prior to the end of the ascent burn, an energetic event in the aft portion of Starship resulted in the loss of several Raptor engines. This in turn led to a loss of attitude control and ultimately a loss of communications with Starship.”

The Starship then flew “within a designated launch corridor” in order to ensure the safety of people on land, on water and in the air. The company confirmed that the debris fell within the pre-planned Debris Response area and that the debris had no toxic materials that could harm marine life or water.

After the failed mission, Space X wrote on micro-blogging site, X, “With a test like this, success comes from what we learn, and today’s flight will help us improve Starship’s reliability. We will conduct a thorough investigation, in coordination with the FAA, and implement corrective actions to make improvements on future Starship flight tests.”

Swiftly taking action, The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it “activated a Debris Response Area and briefly slowed aircraft outside the area where space vehicle debris was falling or stopped aircraft at their departure location.”

Flights to and from Miami International Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, etc were impacted due to SpaceX’s failed mission.

The failure of eighth Starship test comes just a month after the seventh one also met a similar fate in January. Two months into the year, and Elon Musk has witnessed two major failures. With his Starship mission, he hopes to establish a colony on Mars by 2050. 

People on social media have united to boost the morale for those involved in the mission. An X user wrote, “Starship’s test success isn’t just a perfect flight—it’s the lessons we gain. Today’s data, paired with a thorough FAA investigation, will boost reliability for the next leap. Progress isn’t linear; it’s built on every launch, win or lose.”

Someone else wrote, “I know it didn’t end as planned but it was beautiful to watch. We are always winning or learning. Next time for the win!”

Another X user wrote, “Every test flight brings you closer to perfecting Starship, and your relentless pursuit of progress is what makes you a leader in space innovation. The lessons from this launch will only make the next one stronger, and I’m so excited to see you conquer the stars.”

Meanwhile, Elon Musk hasn’t made any statement on his social media yet.

Alexandra Daddario was recently asked by Elle magazine to name the “most outrageous rumor” about herself “that won’t go away.” She didn’t hesitate to give an answer: “That I’m a bad actress.”

“I’m not a bad actress,” Daddario said. “I’ve just done some projects that don’t showcase me in the way that I should be showcased. Okay? Directing and the writing is everything. Sometime’s I’m lit poorly, but I’m not a bad actress. I got an Emmy nomination. How do you think I did that?”

Daddario starred in the first season of Mike White’s popular HBO series “The White Lotus” and was nominated at the Emmys for outstanding supporting actress in a limited series. She starred as Rachel Patton, a journalist whose resort vacation is upended by the behavior of her spoiled husband (Jake Lacy) and his mother (Molly Shannon). Daddario followed “The White Lotus” with a lead role on AMC’s horror series “Mayfair Witches,” which wraps up its second season on March 2.

Prior to earning her Emmy nomination for “The White Lotus,” Daddario got her start in Hollywood when she was cast as Annabeth Chase in the “Percy Jackson” film series. She went on to star in studio tentpoles like “Skyscraper” and “Baywatch,” both of which co-starred Dwayne Johnson. Her supporting role in the first season of HBO’s “True Detective” also served as a breakthrough forher acting career.

“I didn’t expect to have what I had happen happen, which was — it’s a long time ago now — getting naked on a show where I didn’t have a huge role, I didn’t know what to expect,” Daddario previously told Collider about her “True Detective” buzz. “And then of course that episode aired and my manager called, and I’ll never forget it, I was sitting on my boyfriend’s couch and she calls me in the morning after the episode aired and she was like, ‘The phone’s been ringing off the hook all morning. The phone won’t stop ringing!’”

“All of a sudden, everyone in town wanted to meet with me and then I booked ‘San Andreas,’” she added. “So no, I would have never expected that from that role. It was tactical, but not that tactical.”

Next up for Daddario is a role in the movie “A Tree Fell in the Woods.” A third season of AMC’s “Mayfair Witches” has not yet been announced.

Rumer teamed the iconic swimsuit, which Demi made famous in Striptease three decades ago, with a pair of black stiletto heels.

The blond beauty, who went make-up free, also toyed around with a pair of black sunglasses while striking a series of poses.

Demi’s gold bikini is now set to go to auction next month with a starting price of $5,000.

The Hollywood actress, 62, famously wore it in the 1996 movie Striptease, which was considered controversial in its day.

Demi played a single mom and former FBI agent called Erica, who had turned to stripping to pay for a custody battle.

The role helped earn Demi the accolade of being the highest paid actress in the world, netting a record breaking $12.5 million.

However, Demi – who had Rumer during her marriage to movie star Bruce Willis – found herself facing a backlash for taking on the role of an exotic dancer.

The film also flopped in the box office, failed to recoup its production costs and sparked a host of negative reviews from critics.

But despite the poor reception at the time, Striptease has since gone on to be considered a cult classic.

Demi, who was 36 when she played Erica, recently reflected on the Striptease criticism.

In an interview with Variety magazine, she said: “Landing that Striptease payday was so powerful for me because it wasn’t just about me; it was about changing the playing field for all women.

“But because I was portraying a stripper, I betrayed women.

”The narrative quickly became, ‘Well, she’s only getting paid that number because she’s playing a stripper’.

“It hit me really hard. But at the same time, I understood that anybody who steps out first is going to take the hit. That goes for anyone challenging the status quo.”

DEMI’S COMEBACK

Demi has recently celebrated a hugely successful comeback to Hollywood with her leading part in The Substance.

The star, whose breakout role was in the 1990 film Ghost, has taken periodic breaks throughout her career.

But her return to the big screen in The Substance finally earned her the recognition she deserves.

Demi has this year won a Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award and Screen Actors Guild Award for her role as ageing actress Elisabeth Sparkle.

She was also nominated for a BAFTA and her first Academy Award.

In her Golden Globe acceptance speech for Best Actress, Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, Demi reflected on previously being branded a “popcorn actress” by a producer.

She said: “Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me I was a ‘popcorn’ actress.

“That I could do movies that were successful and made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged. And I bought into it. I believed it.

“That corroded me over time to the point where I thought, a few years ago, that maybe this was it…”

Dolly has now crooned about their “ups and downs” in a moving new song – If You Hadn’t Been There – where she thanked him for always being by her side and loving her deeply.

“Carl and I fell in love when I was 18 and he was 23, and like all great love stories, they never end,” she announced on social media alongside her new song.

“They live in memory and in song, and I dedicate this to him,” she concluded.

The song, which has a sentimental yet uplifting tune, is positive despite the melancholic time that it has been unveiled.

“If you hadn’t been there, where would I be? Without your trust, love and belief,” Dolly croons at the start of the touching track.

She then sings: “The ups and downs we’ve always shared, and I wouldn’t be here, if you hadn’t been there.”

Fans have already reacted to Dolly’s new song, which is her first single since World on Fire in May 2023 from her rock album, Rockstar.

Dolly did not reveal her husband’s cause of death but had previously been diagnosed with alzheimer’s disease in 2019.
