During an interview with the U.K.-based online publication Them published on Thursday, March 5, the British music icon revealed he’s in “awe” of the 27-year-old “HOT TO GO!” singer — and also shared that they FaceTime.

“I first heard of ‘Pink Pony Club’ and I played it on my [Apple Music show] ‘Rocket Hour’ about three years ago,” John, 77, said during the interview. He added: “Then I started to FaceTime her personally and just fell in love with her. I loved who she was, what she talked about, how brave she was, her story. I love her bravery and the fact she’s not scared to speak out and she won’t do something if she doesn’t want to.”

“It is not all about doing this and doing that and going where you’re supposed to. If you haven’t got the energy and it is taking your creative juices away, don’t do it. She’s not afraid to say that, and I love her for that,” he continued.

The Goodbye Yellow Brick Road singer also shared that he’s told Roan she can always lean on him for support and advice.

“I have to say, when I’m FaceTiming her, I’m a bit in awe of her because I think she’s so great. And I’m just there to say, ‘Listen, if anything happens and you’re not sure about it, just FaceTime me or email me.’ I’m just there for her. She’s doing very well,” he said.

The musicians recently performed together at the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s Academy Awards viewing party on March 2. John posted photos and clips from the evening on Instagram several days later, sharing that the pair performed Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” and his 1974 hit “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.”

“I officially joined the Pink Pony Club last night, courtesy of the one and only @chappellroan! Performing ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me’ and ‘Pink Pony Club’ together at #EJAFOscars was truly special and a moment I will never forget. Thank you for being there and supporting @EJAF, Chappell ❤️,” he captioned the post.

John also shared that the event raised over $8.6 million for the foundation. “This generosity changes lives for people living with or most vulnerable to HIV around the world. Until next year, West Hollywood,” he added.

John is currently in the midst of promoting his latest album, Who Believes in Angels?, which he wrote with singer and fellow LGBTQ+ activist Brandi Carlile.

Carlile, 43, who was interviewed alongside John in the Them article, explained that the album, and specifically their new single “Swing for the Fences,” represents “unwavering support for LGBTQIA+ people.”

“[From] me and Elton and different generations, coming from different countries, and still saying that the sky’s the limit for you. You can go all the way because we’re behind you, and there are generations of queer people behind you,” she continued.

John added: “The great thing about young people is their spirit and their desire to be heard and to not take no for an answer.”

In addition to releasing a song in memory of her late husband, Parton penned a heartfelt message explaining to fans how strong their bond was in the caption.

“I fell in love with Carl Dean when I was 18 years old,” Parton wrote. “We have spent 60 precious and meaningful years together. Like all great love stories, they never end. They live on in memory and song. He will always be the star of my life story, and I dedicate this song to him.”

Carl Dean, who died March 3, caught the eye of a bank teller in the 1970s – leading Parton to write “Jolene.” The song begs another woman not to take her man and is really “an innocent” song, according to the country crooner.

“She got this terrible crush on my husband,” Parton told NPR in 2008.

“And he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention,” the “Islands in the Stream” singer recalled. “It was kind of like a running joke between us when I was saying, ‘Hell, you’re spending a lot of time at the bank. I don’t believe we’ve got that kind of money.’ So it’s really an innocent song all around, but sounds like a dreadful one.”

However, the title of the song came from a different real-life experience for Parton.

“One night I was on stage, and there was this beautiful little girl,” the musician told NPR. “She was probably 8 years old at the time. And she had this beautiful red hair, this beautiful skin, and beautiful green eyes. And she was looking up at me, holding, you know, for an autograph. And I said, ‘Well, you’re just the prettiest little thing I’ve ever seen.’ I said, ‘What is your name?’ And she said, ‘Jolene.’”

“And I said, well, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene. I said, that is pretty, I said, that sounds like a song. I’m going to write a song about that.”

“Jolene” became one of Parton’s first hit singles after being released in 1973. The song hit the top of Billboard’s country music chart and other artists have covered the song, including her goddaughter, Miley Cyrus, and Beyoncé. Beyoncé’s “Jolene” cover, which was featured on her Grammy-winning “Cowboy Carter” album, broke the top 10 of the Billboard chart last April.

“It’s a great chord progression, people love that ‘Jolene’ lick,” Parton told NPR at the time. “It’s as much a part of the song almost as the song. And because it’s just the same word over and over, even a first-grader or a baby can sing, ‘Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene.’ It’s like, how hard can that be?”

Parton announced Monday her 82-year-old husband had died in Nashville.

“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together,” she wrote in a statement shared to Instagram. “Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”

Dean will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with immediate family in attendance.

Parton first met Dean at a laundromat when she was 18 and he was 21. They married in 1966. He was rarely seen by Parton’s side but always played a strong supporting role in his wife’s life.

Kim Kardashian is remembering a famous old flame.

On Wednesday’s episode of The Kardashians, the reality star opened up about her personal connection to Janet Jackson as she and her friends boarded her private jet to see the legendary music icon in concert.

Dressed in the exact outfit Janet wore in her “If” music video, Kim, 44, told cameras why “Janet means so much to me, more on like a personal level, than anyone could really imagine.”

“I dated Janet’s nephew for years and years in high school,” she recalled of her relationship with TJ Jackson, adding that their romance began in junior high.

Kim also revealed that she was invited to the Jackson family’s game nights.

“One time, the entire Jackson family and me are playing Pictionary,” she began. “I was so nervous, because Janet was like, my everything.”

A bundle of nerves, she drew a “right angle” on the board — despite her word being “angel.”

“Jermaine came up to me afterwards, and was like, ‘Baby girl, the word was ‘angel,’ but I felt so bad for you that we’re gonna let you have this point,’” she laughed. “I wanted to melt.”
