How Bon Jovi faced chaos to put on one of their most dramatic concerts

34 years ago the band had two performances in Guadalajara, Mexico, but its members never imagined that a “socialist” student organization would put their concerts at risk

The year was 1990 , and fans of the American group would witness a historic event: Bon Jovi would close their “ New Jersey Syndicate Tour ” at the Olympic Stadium of the University of Guadalajara (UdeG), Jalisco, after playing in 22 countries for almost 16 months.

All the rockers wanted to be part of that historic event: Bon Jovi’s first tour in Mexico ; however, they never thought they would encounter gunshots, a crashed truck, the possible cancellation of the event and an angry crowd against a group of students.

The Federation of Students of Guadalajara (FEG), a group with “socialist” ideals, claimed that it would not allow the use of the facilities because “the interests of the university community would be harmed,” according to a note from the local newspaper El Informador at the time .

In an attempt to stop the massive event, the FEG unleashed a violent confrontation . Although the excitement generated by the concert was still present, adrenaline and anxiety were palpable in the air. The violence also left a significant mark on the participants’ memories.

The end of a successful tour in Mexico

“Where will he come? Will he come to the city? To Monterrey? Everything that was known came through radio and television. We chilangos said ‘tell us where to go’ and it turns out that (Bon Jovi) are going to play in Guadalajara,” recalled Jaime Díaz in an interview with Infobae , who undertook the trip from the capital of the country to the pearl of the Tapatía with two friends, Jorge and Luis, at the age of 21.

After having success in Monterrey, on February 9 and 10, 1990, the group was going to perform on Friday the 16th at 8:00 p.m. and the next day at 7:00 p.m. in Guadalajara.

The reason for not holding the concert in Mexico City, according to a Chicago Tribune article , was due to a ban by the Mexican government on the rock scene following the controversy generated by the “Avándaro” festival in 1971. The then president, Luis Echeverría, vetoed concerts, cafés cantantes, recordings and radio broadcasts of this genre, for this reason, the venue was the Technological Stadium of the University of Guadalajara.

The university facilities were taken over by members of the FEG hours before the concert , according to Oscar, another attendee of the event. He added that the stage was already set up and that after the audio test they closed the stadium.

However, a note from El Informador on February 17 of that year mentions that the facilities were taken over on Thursday the 15th: “The FEG board of directors expressed its decision not to allow the concert to take place because it would harm the interests of the university community . The takeover took place on Thursday at 7:20 p.m., completely peacefully.”

The dream of seeing Bon Jovi was stronger than everything

“Days before we didn’t know if there was going to be a concert. They kept saying ‘no, yes, it was going to be cancelled’ and there was no real news. We arrived the day before the concert in the evening, with our tickets and praying that it would take place,” Jaime recalls.

After travelling to Guadalajara, the attendees were desperate. Uncertainty gripped them as they didn’t know if they would be able to get in to see Bon Jovi or not.

The president of the FEG, Oliverio Ramos Ramos , had promised to hand over the University facilities on February 16, but “there was no certainty about the concert that was tentatively scheduled to begin at 11:30 p.m. The debate between the organizing company and the Federation of Students was still ongoing,” the note mentions.

Although at 5:30 p.m. on Friday the 16th the Public Security authorities reported that the concert had been cancelled , those attending were hopeful that the stadium would be cleared so they could enter the concert.

“The atmosphere at the stadium was tense and highly publicized: hundreds of young people from various parts of the country expressed their discontent with the occupation of the facilities and were clamoring for the rock group to perform,” the Guadalajara newspaper reported.

Violence and chaos at UdeG

Things escalated: stones, sticks, punches. Armando Álvarez Carbajal, a witness to the events, told Infobae that he decided to step aside. But that wasn’t all, there were even people who decided to force their way through by crashing a truck into the main entrance of the facilities, according to Oscar, who was a high school student at the time: “The Olympic doors were knocked down at around 7:00 or 8:00 at night, minutes before the concert.”

A document provided by the UdeG to Infobae gives an account of the damage suffered by the stadium after the event. On February 19, 1990, the university’s mayor, Aurelio del Toro Navarro, mentions that these were “caused by the people who came to witness the artistic event and this was due to the provocation made by the boys from the Federation of Students of Guadalajara.”

He described how the structure of the number one access gate to the facilities was completely damaged, as well as 20 meters of the fencing and the pipes that supported it.

” It was knocked down by a truck that continued its route to Gate Number 2 of the Olympic Stadium , hitting the door, causing it to become misaligned and detached, also damaging the façade,” the document states.

Once the people were inside, panic broke out when a shooting started , leaving two people injured , according to El Informador. “They were Alfredo Aceves Plascencia, 18 years old… who was shot in the left collarbone, and Victor Francisco Valadez Gutierrez, 15 years old, who suffered a bullet wound in the right ankle.”

Oscar remembers that “some people were running to support one side, others to support the other, and a brawl broke out. There were people on strike, I don’t know, about 200, 300 students against 12,000, 15,000 paying spectators.”

Other damages reported in the UdeG document were damage to four access doors to the university, destruction of the foundations of a baseball field to facilitate access to the facilities, several broken windows, 500 damaged lattices, twenty missing padlocks with chains, a crown from the bathroom key, two showers and eight hooks from the dressing room.

Unexpected ending for a fan

Despite the disaster, the group decided to reschedule the concert the following day , so they performed on Saturday at 12:00 hrs. and in the evening at 20:00 hrs.

The first performance took place at noon and, as Armando recalls, there was no “opening band” because people were already desperate to hear Bon Jovi.

For the second concert, “Rostros Ocultos” was the opening act, however, the band was a pop rock band. “They were neither well nor badly received, it was just that they were more pop and people already wanted rock […] To close the concert of the night, a group of mariachis came on stage,” said Oscar.

Attendees remember that the day had been slightly rainy, Bon Jovi opened with “ Lay your hands on me ” and closed with “ Bad medicine ”, two of the group’s most notable songs.

Jorge, one of Jaime’s friends, played drums and his biggest idol was Tico Torres , Bon Jovi’s drummer, who came in with a sign hidden in his jacket that said “Tico I want your fuckin stick,” Jaime recalled with a laugh.

Although it seemed difficult for his friend to get the drumstick, he wished him good luck, since the concert was at stadium level and they had to push their way through the crowd.

Jaime greeted the group along with the crowd with shouts and cheers. It was part of the first massive hard rock concert in the country. “Great song after great song. Everyone went crazy, jumping, shouting, crying. It was a very energetic concert, a lot of sound, a lot of partying.”

The then 21-year-old student remembers hearing various testimonies on the radio from people who traveled to Guadalajara, who recounted their journey. “The euphoria came mainly from the suffering to be able to enter the stadium.”

“When the concert was over, everyone was fascinated, they came out with their hearts in their hands, crying, there were people saying ‘I can die now’.”

Jaime found Luis and told him that he had had to push people and had gotten separated from Jorge, the drummer. Suddenly they saw him walking towards them with a smile on his face.

-“What happened?

-I made it all the way forward!

– What’s up?

Jorge reached into his jacket and pulled out a drumstick.

– “ He saw me and threw it at me , he almost broke my head with it.”

Bon Jovi’s return to Aztec land

After witnessing the chaotic events surrounding the end of his tour, Bon Jovi did not set foot on Mexican soil until 1997, seven years later, at the Foro Ideal, which was located on Frontera Street, in San Ángel, Mexico City.

On July 19, 2007, he participated in the Buchanan’s charity event, which took place at the Colegio de San Ildefonso; in 2010 he was at the Foro Sol and in 2013 he filled the same venue to 85% capacity where he had DLD as the opening band of his concert.

Michael J. Fox predicts decades of future success, and lasting legacies, for Taylor Swift and Ryan Reynolds.

The 62-year-old actor spoke with People Tuesday for the publication’s 50th anniversary issue, and was asked about who he thought would continue to remain relevant over the next 50 years.

 

The Back To The Future star cited the massive influence and huge platform Swift, 34, already has with her sizeable fanbase.

‘I think she’s going to be a really important person,’ Fox said of Swift, just days after 90s rocker Courtney Love called the Grammy-winning songstress ‘not important.’

Fox, who also played the role of Alex P. Keaton on the hit 80s TV sitcom Family Ties, said of Swift: ‘I think she moves economies, she changes the way the world works, and that’s amazing.’

Fox, who headlined films such as Doc Hollywood, The Secret of My Success and Casualties of War, noted what Swift has ‘said publicly about issues.’

Swift has lent her opinion toward political issues on occasion, such as in 2018 when she publicly opposed RepublicanSenator Marsha Blackburn’s campaign in Tennessee.Fox said that he’s come ‘full circle’ in his thoughts on Swift, as he ‘didn’t have an opinion’ about the musical artist in the first place. 

‘Now I have a wife and four kids who worship her,’ Fox said in reference to his wife Tracy Pollan, 63, and children Sam, 34, Aquinnah, 29, Schuyler, 29, and Esmé, 22.

Fox said Reynolds, 47, also stood out to him as a celebrity whocould have a long-lasting impact in the world.

‘I think Ryan Reynolds could be a really important person,’ Fox said. ‘He’s so smart, he’s so talented … he knows how to leverage things and make them succeed in other areas.’

The Deadpool leading man –who was among the celebrities who accompanied Swift to an NFL game last fall– is ‘a very philanthropic person,’ Fox said of his fellow Canadian actor.

Fox added of Reynolds: ‘I think he’s positioned to really do amazing things … God forbid I should put more weight on him, but I think he’s positioned to really do amazing things.’

Adam Sandler shared why Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s relationship had his entire family—which includes teenage daughters Sunny and Sadie, as well as wife Jackie Sandler—cheering and “high fiving.”

In a world of boys, Adam Sandler’s family knows that Travis Kelce is a gentleman.

Indeed, Adam—who along with his daughters Sadie, 18, Sunny, 15, and wife Jackie Sandler is a self-proclaimed Taylor Swift fanatic—recently detailed his and his daughter’s reaction to the Kansas City Chiefs player and “Karma” singer debuting their romance last September.

“You being together,” Adam gushed on the Aug. 28 episode of New Heights. “That photo of when you first started dating, my family was like, ‘Yes! Look how good they are together! He’s a gentleman! And she’s having so much fun with him!’ Any time Taylor is laughing with you, my whole f–kin’ family is high fiving.”

And Travis’ cheeks were pink in the twinkling lights, as he responded, “You’ve got me sweating, man.”

Of course, Travis and Adam had no problem hyping up the “Fortnight” singer.

“What a girl,” Adam effused. “She means so much to our house. The kids were little and we were listening to Taylor Swift—it was one of the first times that you listen to every song on the record. When I was a kid, The Beatles you did that with, maybe Elton John. Every tune. They knew every word.”

And Travis agreed, “Best performer out there.”

But while Adam’s daughters put him on her music back in the day, he’s become a Swiftie in his own right.

“I love listening to her in the car,” he continued. “I love what she has to say. Every message. Every melody. The production. What she meant to young girls, what she means to women, what she means to guys doing the right thing in life.”

Beyond Taylor’s music, Adam also lauded Taylor for always taking the time to greet his daughters—and even recalled her complimenting them on their 2023 Netflix comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.

“Saturday Night Live, she saw the kids there—took her time with them,” he added. “And then at her premiere for the movie, she talked to the kids about their movie. She talked about what she liked in it, and she just floors my family.”

Of course, because of how much she means to his daughters, Adam also emphasized how Taylor is the one celebrity he still gets a “little f–king jumpy” around.

Meanwhile, Travis may be able to shake off the butterflies now, but that wasn’t always the case. After all, he previously detailed how nervous he was in the early stages of their relationship.

“Everybody around me telling me: ‘Don’t f–k this up,’ and me sitting here saying: ‘Yeah—got it,’” the 34-year-old explained to WSJ. Magazine in November 2023. “That was the biggest thing to me: make sure I don’t say anything that would push Taylor away.”

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s love story began in July 2023, when the singer’s Eras Tour made a stop at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

As a huge Swiftie, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end caught the show with hopes of giving Taylor a friendship bracelet with his number on it. However, he failed to complete the pass due to her pre-show rituals.

“I was disappointed that she doesn’t talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings,” Travis shared on the July 26 episode of his New Heights podcast. “So, I was a little butt-hurt I didn’t get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her.”

After publicly recounting his fumble—a move Taylor would later describe as “metal as hell”—Travis decided to shoot his shot and invite the Grammy winner to watch the Chiefs play at Arrowhead Stadium.

“I threw it out there, I threw the ball in her court,” he shared on The Pat McAfee Show. “I told her, you know, ‘I’ve seen you rock the stage in Arrowhead, you might have to come see me rock the stage in Arrowhead and see which one’s a little more lit.’ So, we’ll see what happens in the near future.”

Travis was rocking a mustache—which he debuted in August during training camp—when he was first introduced to Taylor.

As he later noted of the era, “That ‘stache and the 87 jersey was pretty iconic there for a little bit, and I had it when I met Taylor for the first time.”

Celebrity MasterChef 2024 star Emma Thynn, the Marchioness of Bath, previously said she would struggle to give advice to Meghan Markle, despite a shared connection between the two.

Both are mixed-race women who have had careers in Hollywood and married into noble British families, although Emma had slightly less success in the industry than Meghan.

Speaking about the Duchess of Sussex Emma told the Mail back in 2019 that she “would never presume to give anyone advice” and that she “hadn’t even met” Meghan.

She added: “I wouldn’t want to compare myself to Meghan, I don’t think it would be appropriate. But I think she is doing well; it is a lovely time in her life.”

Emma also touched on her attempts at establishing an acting career in the USA, which nearly resulted in her landing a role in one of the world’s biggest series.

Launched to great aplomb in March, the enterprise is still reportedly, and unexpectedly, stuttering into life. The struggle to achieve lift-off on the endeavour is said to have left 43-year-old Meghan “in tears” according to royal author Tom Quinn.

Mr Quinn told the Mirror: “The one fly in the ointment is Meghan’s new internet brand, America Riviera Orchard. Meghan was in tears when the brand launched and her new jam was widely mocked for being expensive and nothing special.

“She has reached the point now where she thinks that anything and everything she does will be unfairly criticised. Like her husband, she feels that people are unfairly picking on her – she cannot understand why people don’t admire her work.

“She is especially sensitive about any criticism of her luxurious lifestyle in the US – from her point of view this is something to be admired not criticised.”

While the world of the Royal Family may seem miles apart from that of everyday Britons, there is something that brings the whole country together – silly little nicknames.

Prince Phillip is reported to have called the late Queen Elizabeth II ‘Cabbage’ as well as to have used the name ‘Lilibet’, believed to have been also widely adopted by the late monarch’s parents. The latter nickname inspired Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to name their daughter Lillibet, albeit upon announcing her birth they suggested she would be normally called Lili.

Meanwhile, King Charles and Queen Camilla reportedly used to call one another ‘Fred’ and ‘Gladys’, and Meghan is known to refer to Prince Harry as ‘H’.

Princess Kate, however, may be using the cheekiest nicknames of all, as she reportedly refers to her husband Prince William as ‘Big Willy’.

The pair met while studying at St Andrews University where Prince William picked up the name, which didn’t go unnoticed by Kate.

The Prince and Princess of Wales had a whirlwind romance during their degree, with Kate not missing out on any student rites of passage during her time there.

In her book Kate: The Future Queen, author Katie Nicholl writes that Kate had a “hectic week of partying, meeting her ‘university parents’ – older pupils who were in charge of looking after freshers – finding her way around town and settling into her residence hall”.

She adds: “Kate soon found her way around and was often seen relaxing in the common room, curled up in an armchair, a cup of tea in hand, either reading newspaper articles her father rather touchingly mailed to her or getting to know her fellow hall mates.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have broken free from the constraints of senior Royal life, but that doesn’t mean their journey has been without its bumps.

Since their Royal departure, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have dabbled in a variety of new ventures, including launching a Spotify podcast, producing a Netflix documentary series, and most recently, Meghan’s foray into the luxury lifestyle market with the introduction of American Riviera Orchard. However, this move is reported to have ruffled the feathers of culinary veteran Martha Stewart.

The Duchess unveiled her new lifestyle brand in March, amassing a significant online following on Instagram. Although the brand has yet to hit retail shelves, it promises a broad spectrum of products, encompassing everything from household items and cookware to pet supplies, gardening tools, beverages, food, and condiments.

Martha, a renowned food personality and celebrity chef, is reportedly irked by comparisons to Meghan Markle, finding them “irritating and insulting”, leaving the Duchess feeling a little embarrassed. Initial reports suggested that Meghan could rake in more than six figures in sales in the weeks following the launch of American Riviera Orchard, and she’s already been likened to the likes of Martha – a comparison that has evidently not been well received.

A source confided to In Touch that the esteemed chef is not at all impressed with being paralleled to Meghan saying: “Martha has seen hundreds of Meghan types come and go – and says they all come in with the same self-inflated hype, only to find out it’s a whole new ball game when it comes down to brass tacks. She’s tired of being quizzed by people over how she feels about Meghan’s venture because, honestly, it’s irritating and insulting to her that she’s being compared to a rookie!”

Additionally, the Mirror reports an insider divulged that Martha has dedicated decades to cultivating her empire and “decades building her brand”. They said: “If Meghan thinks she can come along and replicate that with barely any experience simply because she’s married to a prince, she better think again. Martha doesn’t put a whole lot of faith in her succeeding, but if she does prove to be any competition, Martha won’t hold back in trying to take her down.”

Regulations forbid royalty from engaging in promotional activities or brand affiliations, yet Meghan’s new project brazenly displays her Duchess of Sussex title on Instagram, underscored by ‘by Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex’.

Meghan Markle Retelling Royal Woes Could Hold Her Back

In a recent interview Meghan Markle revealed that she has not yet “scratched the surface” of the trauma she experienced as a working royal in Britain, in an indirect suggestion that future bombshell revelations could be on the horizon for Buckingham Palace.

However, if the duchess were to do so, this could jeopardize the positive impact she is having with Prince Harry in the charitable sector, according to a new episode of Newsweek‘s The Royal Report podcast.

Speaking to listeners, Chief Royal Correspondent Jack Royston warned that revisiting their era of launching complaints and accusations against the monarchy and Britain “could play very badly” for Harry and Meghan if these bombshells simply re-cover old ground.

Meghan responded to a direct question about the negative mental health impact of her time in Britain during her interview with CBS Sunday Morning host Jane Pauley on August 4. The duchess appeared alongside Harry as they launched the new Archewell Foundation Parent’s Network, supporting parents as their children face the dangers and downsides of social media.

The couple have made significant progress and achievements in their philanthropic work since the beginning of 2023, when their popularity in Britain and America plummeted in the wake of the release of their six-part Netflix show and Harry’s memoir, which listed a number of grievances against the monarchy and British media.

After the release of his memoir, the prince said he was not going to be “stuck in the past,” telling broadcaster Tom Bradby that now the book and Netflix show were done “we can focus on looking forward and I’m excited about that.”

Meghan did not initiate the discussion of her past experiences as a working royal in her CBS Sunday Morning interview, but the issue in itself being raised could prove tricky for her to navigate moving forward.

“You know, these comments by Meghan do feel a bit like there could be an appetite among Harry and Meghan for telling at least some elements of this story again,” Royston told Royal Report listeners.

“We know that Meghan did not like being told she couldn’t talk. You know, it was one of the big lines from the Oprah interview, was Oprah saying, ‘Were you silent or where you silenced?’ And she’s talked lots of times about losing her voice when she joined the monarchy and wanting to get her voice back and wanting to be able to talk.

“But honestly, if I was advising Meghan, I would tell her not to revisit this issue.”

Royston suggested that to do so could risk undermining the public support that the couple have been slowly regaining at home and abroad, and that the focus should now be on the important work being done with the Parent’s Network.

“You know, this project about social media and mental health is an area that really genuinely concerns parents right up and down the age range of young kids,” he said.

“It’s a massive issue and I think Harry and Meghan’s focus here needs to be on turning this project towards creating actual solutions and advice and resources for parents, so that they can have some sense that they know what to do when their kids hit that age when they want social media, but are also extremely vulnerable to its darker side.

“If they can get on kind of a positive footing here and have a positive message about making things better, improving the situation for parents, then I think it could be a fantastic project. You know, if they can give parents something they really, truly need, then Americans will thank them for it. And actually, all over the world as well, because this is an issue all over the planet.”

“But,” he added, “If they wind up getting too far into their royal beef and all of that negative history that people have heard before anyway, then they will come out looking like they’ve potentially politicized, certainly if it’s in the context of this project, that they’ve politicized a really important issue that actually deserves to be viewed in a nonpartisan way.”
