Celtics’ Al Horford ‘overwhelmed’ by receiving highest Dominican honor

 

Nobody is beloved more in the Boston Celtics’ locker room than Al Horford. The veteran big man, who originally spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Atlanta Hawks, has made the city of Boston his home, and he has become a Celtics icon after embracing his role as the heart and soul of this organization. In doing so, Horford helped lift the Celtics to their 18th championship in team history this past season, his first NBA championship in his 17th season.

At 38 years old, Horford is now nearing the end of the line on what could be considered a Hall of Fame career. Championships oftentimes tend to define players, and Horford has a ring to his name, along with five All-Star appearances.

Whether Horford makes the Hall of Fame or not, he will always be immortalized in Celtics lore, as will he be in his home country of the Dominican Republic. The Celtics’ recent championship made Horford the first Dominican-born player to ever hoist the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy into the air, which prompted his country to fully embrace him with the highest honor possible upon his arrival this week.

With the championship trophy in his arms on Thursday, Horford met with the country’s politicians, including Dominican Republic president Luis Abinader, who awarded him with the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sánchez, and Mella in the degree of Knight, which is the country’s highest honor, according to CBS News.

Alongside his family and Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla, Horford called this moment one of the best days of his life.

“I knew I was going to come meet the president, but I didn’t know I was gonna get the highest award for the country,” Horford stated. “So, very special for me, very special for my family. I feel very proud right now. Very overwhelmed with a lot of emotion. Very, very special day for me today.”

The 2023-24 NBA season was Horford’s sixth with the Celtics. However, this is his second stint with the team, as the veteran signed a $109 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2019 before being traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder one year into this deal. Boston then reacquired Horford due to his familiarity with the franchise, as well as due to his contributions at the center position.

This past season, Horford played in a total of 65 games for the Celtics, 33 of which he started. In said games, he averaged 8.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while shooting 51.1 percent from the floor and 41.9 percent from three-point range. The fact that Horford has fully embraced his role of doing whatever the Celtics need of him with however many minutes he gets in any given game speaks volumes to the culture he has helped build in Boston.

Sacrifice is needed in order for a team to win a championship, and Horford has sacrificed his proven All-Star potential and skill in order to help the Celtics win by any means necessary. Now, after securing his first and only championship, the goal remains the same for Horford heading into the 2024-25 season.

The Celtics are once again title favorites, and Horford will be looking to claim what could be his second and final championship with the team he adores at the end of his career.

Prince Harry has received some unexpected royal birthday wishes.

The Duke of Sussex turned 40 on Sunday, Sept. 15, and his milestone birthday was celebrated by both his father, King Charles, 76, and his brother Prince William, 42, in posts on social media, marking the first time the royal family has publicly acknowledged Harry’s birthday since 2021.

On the official Royal Family social media accounts, which are run by King Charles’ office at Buckingham Palace, a post celebrated Harry’s milestone birthday with a simple message.

” 🎂 Wishing The Duke of Sussex a very happy 40th birthday today!,” the caption of the post read, alongside a photograph of the Duke smiling.

Meanwhile, the Prince and Princess of Wales shared the Royal Family’s post on their own Instagram Stories account and on X (formerly Twitter), adding their own celebratory message.

PEOPLE understands Harry will mark his 40th birthday on Sunday, Sept. 15, with a private celebration in Montecito, surrounded by family and friends. Harry is then expected to continue the festivities abroad with close friends.

The celebratory posts come as a surprise, as public birthday wishes are usually reserved for working royals—though occasionally made for milestone birthdays. Given the ongoing rift between Harry and his brother, as well as his strained relationship with their father, many see these first birthday messages in years as a potential olive branch from King Charles and Prince William.

In July, sources told PEOPLE that Harry’s calls and letters to King Charles, go unanswered, and his attempts to connect with Prince William — through texts, calls, and messages — were similarly ignored.

However, while the royal insider noted that the rift with Prince William was “very bad,” they added that it was not “irreparable.”

The brothers last presented a united front with their wives, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle,  after Queen Elizabeth’s death in September 2022, when they met mourners outside Windsor Castle

At the coronation of King Charles in May 2023, Harry stayed on the sidelines and sat two rows behind William and his family. At the time, Meghan remained in the U.S. for their eldest child Prince Archie’s birthday.

When Prince Harry returned to the U.K. in May 2024 for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, he did not meet with either the King or Prince William. At the time, the Duke of Sussex’s spokesperson attributed the lack of interaction between Harry and the King to the sovereign’s “full schedule.” However, sources close to Harry suggest it was because he wanted to discuss his ongoing battle for security, which he has been fighting for in court for more than four years and believes his father has the power to reinstate. (Buckingham Palace will not comment on security provisions, but a palace source previously told PEOPLE the notion that Harry’s security is in Charles’s hands is “wholly incorrect.”)

The family rift that first became public in 2020 when Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped back from their royal roles has been marked by blistering attacks and unresolved tensions. Yet for Harry, the most significant unresolved issue remains security.

Despite a positive meeting between the father and son in February following the King’s cancer diagnosis, communication between the two has since broken down. Those close to Prince Harry say the monarch no longer takes his son’s calls or replies to his letters.

“He gets ‘unavailable right now,’ ” a friend of Harry’s told PEOPLE. “His calls go unanswered. He has tried to reach out about the King’s health, but those calls go unanswered too.”

Amid the estrangement, Harry remains concerned for the safety of his wife and children.

A source close to the situation said, “Harry is determined to protect his own family at all costs.”

Speaking to The Sun royal expert Hugo Vickers said: ‘I know people around Windsor who told how difficult she was when they were in Adelaide Cottage’.

‘There was a time when she was incredibly rude to one of the sub-gardeners, and the head gardener complained to the Queen, and she drove down to Adelaide Cottage and ticked her off.

‘There’s a lot of evidence they can’t keep hold of staff and that is a very very bad sign because some people inspire huge loyalty, the late Prince Philip for example,’ Vickers said.

Meghan had previously been accused of bullying palace staff before the pair’s move to California, prompting royal aides to launch an inquiry into claims of Meghan’s ‘belittling’ behaviour towards two personal assistants.

Staff were said to have been left in tears and feeling ‘traumatised’ – with some likening their condition to having post-traumatic stress.

While details of the report were never revealed, the allegations have always been strongly denied by the duchess, whose lawyers described them at the time as a ‘calculated smear campaign’.

The couple have gained a reputation for losing employees, and are believed to have lost at least 18 members of their workforce since they married in 2018.

Nine or more have left their roles since the couple escaped Britain for California in 2020, including their global press secretary Toya Holness and Meghan’s top aide and private secretary Samantha Cohen.

These claims come as the couple prepare to celebrate the Duke of Sussex turning 40 on Sunday, as separate sources suggested he was feeling increasingly lonely in the US and considers his security guard David Langdown his best friend.

Harry issued a statement on Friday night telling of his excitement at turning 40, saying: ‘Bring on the new decade.’

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are officially spending time together!

The “Lavender Haze” singer, 33, was captured on video leaving Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, on Sunday night with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, also 33, by her side.

As the two walked together other on their way out of the building, Swift smiled briefly at the camera and appeared to say “bye.” Kelce, dressed in a patterned two-piece outfit, also shot a smile and brief nod to the camera

Swift was part of the crowd cheering on the Chiefs in their matchup against the Chicago Bears Sunday. She watched the on-field action from Kelce’s suite with the athlete’s mother, Donna Kelce. The pair could be seen sitting shoulder-to-shoulder and chatting and laughing together throughout the game.

The Grammy winner showed her team spirit by wear ing a red-and-white Chiefs jacket, which was later tied around her waist as she left the stadium. Footage from the game, shared by Fox Sports on X, showed Swift smiling, cheering and clapping enthusiastically as she watched Kelce and h is teammates. At one point, she even raised her hands in the air in excitement.

Swift’s stadium appearance comes just days after Kelce invited her to attend the game while appearing on The Pat McAfee Show podcast. A source told PEOPLE that once Swift heard about the invite, she didn’t let a busy schedule stop her from accepting.

“Taylor is very focused on work right now and hanging out with her girlfriends,” the source said. “Travis invited her to the game, and of course she said ‘yes.’”

“She just thought it was a fantastic way to spend Sunday,” the source added.

On the podcast Thursday, host Pat McAfee asked Kelce if he wanted to “expand upon” the rumors that he and Swift are dating, which is “being talked about by the whole entire world right now.”

Though he wouldn’t confirm at the time whether he and Swift had actually met in person, he did share that he “threw the ball in her court.”

In a clip posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Becky Hardin, the young fan’s aunt, Kelce walked up to a crowd of fans at practice and threw his yellow football gloves, emblazoned with his jersey number 87, over to a girl in a red Taylor Swift-inspired Chiefs T-shirt standing in the crowd.

The girl’s family members were seen cheering and waving their arms in excitement after she caught one of the gloves. A man was then heard shouting back, “Thank you, Travis!” — as Kelce signed autographs.

It was made clear by his father that the newborn would be known as Harry – except of course when he was very, very naughty.
So that meant that his full name was used quite often by his parents.

And he made the most of it.

Harry’s cheeky sense of humour and ­happy-go-lucky nature made him instantly lovable.

Diana’s former chef Darren McGrady recalled how Harry tried to trick him into giving him and William pizza for an evening meal.
It’s no secret that Wills and Harry, who he described as ‘royal princes but with children’s’ palates,’ were partial to the odd bit of fast food.
American-style foods like loaded potato skins, baby-back BBQ ribs, and pizza were apparently among Harry’s firm favourites.

Princess Diana would take them down to Sticky Fingers near Kensington High Street for a treat, McGrady said in 2018.

But their nannies at Kensington Palace — who used to decide on the princes’ menu — were not always as keen to indulge the boys with their favourite foods.
Instead, they often opted for traditional roast meat and lots of healthy greens like broccoli and cabbage.
‘One evening roast chicken was on the menu,’ McGrady said.

‘And I found a note on the desk that read “Darren please give the boys pizza” and was signed Jess, the name of the nanny.
‘But it was written in [a] 10-year-olds’ handwriting,’ he continued, explaining that he soon realised it was Harry attempting to pick his own menu.
McGrady said he didn’t make the boys pizza that night and made sure they got the original chicken option ‘because he was too scared of the nanny,’ but he kept the note to tease Harry about it.
Former Police bodyguard Ken Wharfe first met the boys in 1986 when he was appointed to look after them.

He recounted that Diana told him: ‘I don’t envy you looking after my kids’.

And he would often hear more than once Diana scolding Harry with the words: ‘HENRY, NO!’
Wharfe said the angriest he ever saw Diana was when she was telling off Harry for hitting William with a snooker cue while they stayed on Richard Branson’s Caribbean island, Necker.

One of the worst scrapes he ever got into was when he was five or six.

talking to lawyers and fighting the British Government because he has lost his taxpayer police protection in the UK.
It is a great pity that the young chap who endeared himself to millions in his home country and beyond has now turned into a sour man as he reaches a milestone birthday.
