Jayson Tatum makes Celtics history as Boston pummels Bulls in rematch

Some of the greatest players in basketball history suited up for the Boston Celtics. None of them matched the stat line Jayson Tatum posted Saturday night in Chicago.

In one of the most impressive performances of this NBA season, Tatum piled up 43 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists as the Celtics routed the Bulls 123-98. He was the first Boston player ever to post those numbers in a single game and the first from any team to do so since Luka Doncic in December 2022.

The only other Celtic ever to record a 40-point triple-double was Larry Bird, who had three such games during his Hall of Fame career. Bird played at least 46 minutes in each of those games, two of which went to overtime. Tatum played 36 in his, watching the final minutes from the bench with Boston up big.

Add in Tatum’s shooting stats (16-for-24 from the floor, 9-for-15 from 3-point range), and he joined an even more exclusive club. The other only player in NBA history to go for 43-16-10 with at least nine made threes: James Harden against the New York Knicks on New Year’s Eve 2016.

“I think any time you see a guy play like that, you’re just kind of fascinated by it,” Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla told reporters postgame. “But I thought he did it within the flow of the game. I don’t think he went outside of what we normally do, and that’s a testament to him. But just his shot-making, his decision-making and then his ability to rebound was just great.

“I thought he kind of controlled the entire game with his poise and decision-making and took what the defense gave him.”

Boston also got productive nights from Kristaps Porzingis (22 points, seven rebounds, two steals, two blocks) and Jaylen Brown (19 points, eight assists, five rebounds, one steal) as the Celtics avenged their contentious home loss to Chicago on Thursday.

Mazzulla’s club improved to 22-6 and has yet to lose consecutive games this season.

The Celtics’ 3-point issues from Thursday night carried over into the early portion of Saturday’s rematch. They made just one of their first six threes, and the Bulls led for much of the first quarter. Boston was able to exploit Chicago’s NBA-worst paint defense, however, starting 7-for-9 on shots inside the restricted area and owning a 14-4 edge in points in the paint during the first quarter.

Brown spearheaded that effort, with all 10 of his first-quarter points coming on shots at the rim or free throws earned through drives. Mazzulla played Brown for the entire opening quarter, subbing out Tatum after eight minutes.

Oddly, for all the success Boston had attacking the rim early, both teams missed badly on dunk attempts in the first quarter, with Derrick White bricking what would have been a highlight-reel jam for the Celtics and the Bulls botching two. That would change as the game progressed.

Tied at 28-28 after one, the Celtics reeled off a rapid 12-2 run midway through the second quarter that put them up double digits. Brown and Tatum provided 10 of those points, and both hit double figures before halftime, with Tatum one rebound shy of a first-half double-double. Porzingis fueled Boston’s offense early in the second, scoring or assisting on each of the Celtics’ first four baskets in the quarter (while adding a pair of free throws).

Boston led by 12 late in the first half, took a 61-54 advantage into the locker room and then dominated a third quarter that featured one eye-popping slam from Porzingis and two from Tatum. Up eight with just over two remaining in the third, Tatum slipped past Coby White at the 3-point line and posterized Jalen Smith at the rim. He then proceeded to drill two threes as Boston stretched its lead to 16.

Tatum was close to perfect in the third quarter, going 7-for-8 from the floor and nearly outscoring Chicago by himself (23-18). He also grabbed five rebounds to the Bulls’ six as a team. The Celtics led 93-77 entering the fourth quarter and cruised from there, with Tatum adding his seventh, eighth and ninth 3-pointers before shutting it down for the night with 3:27 to play.

In ESPN’s first NBA MVP straw poll of the season, released Friday, Tatum ranked fourth behind Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Giannis Antetokounmpo. He did not receive a single first-place vote and got just three of the 95 second-place votes.

Asked whether Tatum’s talent gets overlooked in MVP debates – he finished sixth in official voting last season and has never been higher than fourth – Mazzulla replied: “Yeah, no question. One-hundred percent it does.”

“I say this about him all the time: Because he’s been doing great things for such a long time, I still think he gets taken for granted,” the coach told reporters. “I think his greatness gets taken for granted because he’s done it for a long time and it comes relatively easy for him. And we’re in Boston, which is the expectation. But it’s big-time – big-time performance by him.”

This was the type of performance that could change voters’ minds about Tatum, who leads the Celtics in points, rebounds, assists and steals per game this season.

The Celtics will visit the Orlando Magic on Monday night.

Mazzulla fined

Mazzulla’s holiday wishes cost him a pretty penny.

The Celtics head coach was fined $35,000 on Saturday for “aggressively pursuing and directing inappropriate language toward a game official” after Thursday night’s loss to the Bulls.

Mazzulla had to be held back by multiple members of his coaching staff and escorted toward the locker room while attempting to argue with Tony Brothers’ officiating crew. Asked after the game about the exchange, the coach quipped: “I just hadn’t seen them in a while, so (I was saying) just a Merry Christmas, happy holidays,”

Mazzulla was hit with a technical foul during the fourth quarter of the loss for coming onto the court to argue a jump-ball call. He said postgame that he deserved the tech, and he told reporters Saturday that he expected to be fined.

“It is what it is,” Mazzulla said in his pregame news conference. “Those are the rules. … I don’t know if it’s about sending a message, but at the time, I felt like we did what we needed to do, and move on.”

 

Jayson Tatum’s big night: 1st 40-plus point triple-double for Celtics since Larry Bird in 1992

 

 

Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics started slowly, tussling early with the Chicago Bulls.

But the defending NBA champions came on and prevailed 123-98 on Saturday night, with Tatum’s 43-point, 16-rebound and 10-assist effort earning the five-time All-Star comparisons to former Celtics great and Hall of Famer Larry Bird.

Tatum’s third career triple-double was the first for a Celtics player that included 40 or more points since Bird scored 49 points with 14 rebounds and 12 assists against Portland in a 152-148 double-overtime win on March 15, 1992, according to the team.

Tatum emphasized winning is what matters most, but a little icing on the cake isn’t bad.

“Larry Bird is probably the best player to ever wear this uniform,” Tatum said. “So any time you accomplish something in the same sentence as him, it’s something special, even if you never reach that pinnacle.”

Bird finished with 59 triple-doubles in his 13 seasons with Boston. According to the Celtics, Tatum’s was the first for the team that included 40 or more points and 15 or more rebounds. Tatum’s effort also counted as his sixth straight double-double and 14th this season.

Tatum got rolling in the second quarter, then scored 18 points in the third as Boston used a 19-8 run to open a 93-77 lead heading into the fourth. He finished 16 for 24 from the floor, hitting 9 of 15 3-point attempts. Two free throws rounded out his scoring line.

“As a basketball player, you feel the rhythm, the ball is finding you,” Tatum said. “You’re just being active all over the place and probably in that third quarter.

“Joe (coach Mazzulla) just challenges me every night, just to amplify my teammates and figure out ways to dominate all over the court. Obviously tonight, I’m scoring a lot and getting rebounds. It just looks different on a given night.”

The game was tied at 42 midway through the second quarter, then the Celtics and Tatum found offensive rhythm. Boston had a 61-54 lead at the half using an 8-0 run to open a 12-point lead at one point. Tatum and the Celtics took charge in the third after the Bulls had closed to within five points.

“He went outside what we normally do and that’s a testament to him,” Mazzulla said. “Just his shot-making, his decision-making, his ability to rebound. I thought he kind of controlled the entire game.”

The Houston Texans took on the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 16 at Arrowhead Stadium, and they likely had no idea they would be facing off against the referees.

Fans were again mad at league referees in another game involving the Chiefs.

During the team’s Week 16 matchup with the Houston Texans, what appeared to be a Patrick Mahomes fumble was ruled a forward pass that not only screwed the Texans out of a scoop and score but also received a penalty added to it that enraged viewers.

Whitlock, a noted Chiefs fan, couldn’t believe what he was watching.

It wasn’t just one call but an assortment of calls that screwed the Texans over against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I’m a Chiefs fan. This officiating is hard to watch. It’s embarrassing. It’s criminal what’s happening to the Texans,” Whitlock stated.

Houston reporter Will Kunkel added to the pile-on as he claimed that the officials made the call in response to fans chanting “ref, you suck” at them throughout the game.

“The officials weren’t going to take the ‘REF YOU SUCK’ chants lying down,” Kunkel tweeted. “They’re back with a vengeance to prove their love for the Chiefs.”

Luckily for Houston, they locked up the AFC South last week and are going to the playoffs despite the loss to the Chiefs.

The Chiefs are in the No. 1 spot but haven’t secured it just yet.

Man, 20, Has $8,000 Prosthetic Leg Stolen from His Car After Cancer Diagnosis: ‘Can’t Catch a Break’

A man who was diagnosed with bone cancer as a teenager had his prosthetic leg, valued at $8,000, stolen out of the trunk of his car in Portland earlier this month.

According to Oregon Crime Stoppers, NBC News and affiliate station KGW 8, Atticus Root was out for dinner with some friends in downtown Portland on Dec. 8 when he decided to change out his usual prosthetic left leg for his spare, placing his custom one in the trunk of his car, along with some tools for his job in welding.

When he came back from dinner, his tools were gone — along with his prosthetic leg, which he has used since he was 14 years old, when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer that occurs in kids and young adults, according to NBC. The cancer was located in his left femur bone and forced him to amputate his whole leg, resulting in him relearning to walk, work and live with his custom-made prosthetic.

Root’s uncle, Joshua Veldstra, described the theft to NBC on Dec. 20 as a “‘he just can’t catch a break’ kind of situation.”

“He seems to have a pretty good attitude, or at least he’s trying to maintain a good attitude about what happened. But it’s a horrible thing.” Veldstra added to NBC. “I mean, who steals a prosthetic leg?”

According to Root’s uncle, the leg is valued at around $8,000 by Oregon Crime Stoppers, although the organization states that “its true value cannot be measured in dollars as it provides great assistance to a 20-year-old Portland man who lost his leg to a bone cancer.”

Vestra told the outlet that it helped his nephew relearn how to exercise, and it was more comfortable than any other prosthetic he had ever used. It also had a bendable knee and blade for running.

“It was custom-made to fit his body,” he said, noting that his spare wasn’t as comfortable. “It was made just for him.”

“It’s super important for his work too, because he didn’t have to use crutches and was able to use both hands,” his uncle added. “But now everything is harder again.”

Root’s mother, Irene Veldstra, turned to her local and online community for help in the wake of the theft, starting a GoFundMe page to raise the $8,000 needed to purchase a new leg.

“It’s been a rough month then, this, I am fully aware life sucks, but Atticus was just beginning to feel better and get back on his ‘feet,’ he doesn’t deserve this,” she wrote on the fundraising page, noting that because it was custom-made, the prosthetic had no serial number.

“… [Prosthetics] are all custom made to the patient, plus the prosthetist who understands all the science of the body and building the leg. Things I’ve learned – legs are complicated,” she added.

As of Saturday, Dec. 21, the fundraiser was closed and had garnered nearly $12,000 in donations.

“The family is very relieved and so grateful to everyone who has donated,” Veldstra told NBC in a text message, adding that it still could be several months before the new leg can be built.

An officer with the Portland Police Bureau told PEOPLE in a statement that the case is still under investigation, and refuse organizations are on the lookout in case the leg was thrown in the trash.

Oregon Crime Stoppers is also offering a $2,500 reward to anyone who can share information or an anonymous tip leading to the return of the prosthetic.

These days Brenda Lee is best known for the perennial 1958 holiday classic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” which she recorded when she was 12 years old. But during the ’60s, she was the hottest female pop star on the planet — the Taylor Swift of her time.

She was such a huge star that she scored back-to-back No. 1 hits in 1960 with “I’m Sorry” and “I Want to Be Wanted” while she was still in her teens. Early in the decade, she even headlined a show where her opening act was The Beatles. Lee talks about her connection to her fellow rock and roll legends in the new PBS American Masters documentary Brenda Lee: Rockin’ Around.

When I started touring in England, I was popular [there] before I ever was here,” Lee, 80, says in the documentary. “There was this group that opened this show for me known as The Silver Beatles, who became The Beatles.”

While hanging out with the Fab Four, she says, she forged an especially close connection to one of them in particular.

“John was my favorite Beatle,” Lee recalls. “I loved them all, but John was, to say the least, irreverent, had a great sense of humor. He was magical. He was a genie in the bottle, and he let me have the cork. John Lennon said I was the first female rocker.”

To that revelation, Keith Urban chimes in. “Yeah, she deserves that,” he says in the film. “Of course. John Lennon didn’t give out compliments easy.”

Although Lee made her biggest mark on the charts with her lovelorn pop ballads in the ’60s, her country hits in the ’70s and ’80s, and, of course, the aforementioned Christmas classic, she started out as a rockabilly singer. One of her biggest hits was the rock-edged 1959 Top 5 single “Sweet Nothin’s,” which Kanye West sampled on his 2013 song “Bound 2.”

Lee is one of only a handful of acts to have been inducted into the both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame. And last Christmas, after 65 years in circulation, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” finally ascended to the summit of Billboard‘s Hot 100, making her the oldest performer, at 78, to score a No. 1 single on the chart. She celebrated her 79th birthday two days later with a second week at the top.

Country superstar Trisha Yearwood, who appears in the documentary and in Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” video, marvels at Lee’s tremendous staying power — and her history with The Beatles.

“There’s not very many people you can be around with and they talk about that time they hung out with The Beatles,” Yearwood says.

Another wrote: “Since his health crisis last year, I’m so glad Jamie has made a full recovery. But now this is more! “It’s sad that someone like him should be subjected to such rudeness and violence.”

In a Netflix special on December 10, he revealed that a pain from the brain that led to a stroke in April 2023 caused him to be hospitalized for 20 days.
