Back in French Lick, I don’t have those problems, and that’s why I go back there.”

Even at the peak of his career, when he had the means to buy whatever he wanted, Bird remained unimpressed by luxury. “It’s the same with nice cars, Mercedes-Benz and all that. I can’t see putting $50,000 or $60,000 into a car when our house growing up was worth $10,000,” he admitted.

But for Bird, the idea of spending money for status never made sense. His loyalty was to comfort, not fashion. “Clothes never did catch my eye,” he said. “I always wore what I felt comfortable in. I’ll wear pretty much anything if I get it for free.”

His true wealth was his relentless work ethic, his competitive fire, and his ability to dominate the game with skill rather than flash. He wasn’t concerned with living up to an image; he was focused on winning.
